I picked up my 91 Supercab back in 2008 for $1k from a friend, he told me I could have it for 800, but I gave him what he had on the window anyway. A 2.9L powers the beast, it has a manual transmission and manual transfer case, and I think it had about 140-150k on the odometer when I took possession. I have it up to about 210k miles now, and have run it from Michigan to Arizona and back twice, as well as adding a few more dings here and there.
I have changed quite a few parts over the last five years, including: 2-3 clutches, clutch master/slave cylinder and line, 2-3 leaf springs, rear shocks, a transmission, new lockout hubs, front rotors, new brakes twice, brake lines, brake booster, radiator, radiator hoses, heater fan, distributor/cap/coil, throttle position sensor, gaskets from the head up, exhaust twice, header on one side, fuel pump, air filter, carrier bearing (today), and of course plugs/wires/etc.
I am sure I've forgotten things, but at this point it feels like I have changed more than I have left untouched. I probably would not have had to change some of these multiple times if not for my habit of loading it up with close to 2000 pounds in the bed and running it across the country in two days. I must say that this truck is very solid, and will go through about anything with just standard 165/75R15 tires. I have not found anything that requires 4L, it will crawl through waist deep snow in 4H, and has pulled a full sized Dodge 4x4 out of the snow on several occasions.
I would like to get into some body work, but unfortunately my budget has kept work restricted to essential mechanical items. The body is starting to seem pretty rough though, so hopefully I will be able to increase my income soon so I can get working on cosmetic repairs.
I also have an 89 standard cab that I picked up in 2011 for $1.2k. That truck had seven 33x12.5's and two 33x10.5's for tires, as well as sitting on about 6" of lift. I mostly picked it up for parts, since it also has a 2.9L engine. The truck has a lot of body roll due to the lift though, so I do not like it as a driver. I sold five of the tires for $500, so I am only out $700 for everything that is left.
I want to pull the bumpers and rollbar to put on the 91, as they are 1/4" thick steel tubing, though I need to modify the mounting brackets to get them to work. The truck also has racing style bucket seats that I am considering using to replace the 60/40 bench, although the bench is in good condition excepting a busted slide on the drivers seat.
