I need some help. I'm worried a wheel bearing is going out but I don't exactly know the signs. I've noticed a slight whering sound coming from the front passenger tire and also when I hit the brakes at low speed it sounds like the rotor us grinding. The pads and rotors are not old so I know that's not the issue. I've heard it can be a sign of a wheel bearing going out? Any input? It also feels like the rotors are warped, but I'm pretty sure that's just because they are.

wheel bearing

If ya have a jack then lift one of the beams up so that the tire is off the ground then grab the top of the tire and try to move it in and out of the wheel well. If you can feel some slop or play in the tire then you should replace it or have it replaced.

Wouldn't that be a sign of tie rod wear?

Tie rod end wear is signified by grabbing the tire at 3 and 9 o clock...if there is play it is most likely the TRE.

Worn/shot ball joints are signified by grabbing the tire at 12 and 6 o clock.

Worn/Shot bearings are signified by grabbing the tire any where and finding looseness and play, without the TRE's or balljoints being bad as well.

jack it up and take the tire off, if there is significant groove lines on the rotor, the bearing is toast, and has allowed the rotor to move in towards the rotor and caliper bracket. It will be obvious if something is shot.

My drivers side bearings were going out. I always thought it was my tires till I got new ones. I paid more attention to what my truck was saying and it turned out it only humed and vibrated when I pulled left on the wheel. Never heard any grinding. If it grinding it can't be your bearings. Sounds like your caliper is sticking to me. I don't think ball joints could make a grinding sound either. They're just kind of seated in a space where it can't pop loose. Had my dads 93 f 150 ball joint come out but that thing had original part and close to 300k miles lol. I did replace mine though to get an alignment. I do recomend getting better than the 5 dollar bearings and hub seal if they are bad. My inner bearings blew up and seized around my spindle.

What bearings would be good replacements?

Timken brand.

I went and got nationals by moog. youre gonna need a hub seal too and to replace the bearings go ahead and rent a race driver/press tool from a local parts store. You get all your money back when you return it. I paid like 64$ at o'reilly for one. While your at it get a bearing packer. Not the cone one, the one you push down on. Its amazing; never seen bearings packed so perfect. :yahoo:
