Whats your most money "invested" in a vehicle after purchase?


Fiberglass caps with a reinforced roof are expensive. Aluminum is much cheaper and harder to find. Not to mention a lot noisier to camp in.

Since caps have seemed to have fall en out of favor, I’m sure it hasn’t helped the prices any from when I got the one the 2011 and the one for the 2019. And resale value is absolutely horrible if you want to ever get rid of one. Getting someone to pay $300 bucks for a used cap is a miracle in itself.
 
I always had a HARD time selling caps. I had some really nice ones and it was like pulling teeth to just get $20 bucks out of them. I couldn't fathom spending $3k but hey it's not my money. I'd rather buy a used truck or motorcycle or a bunch of guns for that kind of money, you know, something fun. Why would you want to camp in your bed anyway? Aint it only like 72"x44"?? I'm 6' so that wouldn't be comfy at all. My GMC I found out I can almost fit a 4'x8' sheet of plywood in it. I probably could have fit the full sheet if I felt like turning the steering wheel with my belly button. I had them cut it down to a 4'x6' an had plenty of room to spare so I could easily fit a 4'x7' sheet of plywood with no problem so then I could easily add an air mattress if I wanted to camp in my truck. Plus I would have the benefits of heat, music, safety as opposed to sleeping in the bed of a truck.
 
Different reasons. Stuck somewhere over night, on a rescue mission with no camp setup, out on a trail over night and don’t wanna or can't setup camp.

Plus it gives a place to store gear that is mostly secure and out of the weather if I ever get a roof top tent.

And it also helps preserve the bed. I rarely ever need the cap off for anything, so totally worth it to me.

It’s not everyone’s bag for sure.

I have well north of 1000 dollars in my ranger....i paid 375 bucks for it.

My 97 F250....probably 14,000 including the 9300$ purchase price.

The worst is my quad....ive got 5500 or so in that including the 2200 purchase.

That’s not bad... I’m into my SxS by over $7k, not including the $13k purchase price.
 
88 Bronco 2 EB I think I have about $12-13k into...tires, brakes, transmission, engine, hood and lower tan trim color repainted....sadly the rest still needs repainted. Interior still needs a good cleaning, but still a hell of a lot cheaper than anything new on the market and nothing new out there I'd waste my money on. At least with the Bronco 2 I can turn wrenches on it if I need to myself.
 
I don't even count the money anymore. If you can afford what your doing then no problem. If my SO actually knew what I spend on cars and guns I'd be up shits Creek!

My 94 I have about $2,000 into it with a purchase cost of $600 but this is a drop in a bucket compared to the 86 Toyota Pickup I built as a teen in high school. That one with a full nose to tail going over cost me around $8,000 for a $1,400 purchase cost. In comparison my Ranger is in a lot better starting shape and I can't do a paint job on it at the moment so the cost is a lot lower at this point.
 
If I were to count the daily driver I've spent the most on it would of been my 05 outback xt. Bought it for 9k and put close to 13k in it over 4 or 5 years. It was higher mileage, so when stuff needed replacing I of course found the nicest aftermarket piece to replace it with lol. Biggest investment was buying an entire STi drivetrain and getting it swapped.

Not doing that again. Not for a daily lol.
 
But it’s a Polaris. $5500 in repairs over 19 years is below average.
Next time i guess ill just buy a honda and deal with getting passed by kids on the trail riding souped up lawn mowers.
 
Ahh... let’s see...

2000 Ranger 2wd... bought brand new for 10,500. Aside from normal maintenance it didn’t end up getting a whole lot. It was too new and then I got into other projects, especially after I wrapped it around a tree. Never did get back to it yet.

My 88 BII cost me $340. Only spent a few hundred on it, probably around a grand total but it’s only spent about 2 months on the road since I bought it. It’s presently in pieces.

My 89 choptop cost me $160. I had around 1,800 total into it including purchase when it went on the road the first time, converted to 4x4 and sitting on 33’s. That slowly crept up to around 2,500 as time went on and it was on and off the road. Then a branch fell in a storm and smashed the windshield which prompted another transformation. My best guess is that it’s well north of 5k now on 35’s.

My 95 F-150 was 1,500 and I sank nearly that much into it in the first year. No idea how much has been sunk into it since, but it’s proven to be a reliable and sturdy truck. I don’t hesitate to work it hard, it’s a beast. Just used it to pull out three trees today and it did it with ease. It’s crossed the scales at over 10k when a loader got a little ambitious loading me with crushed concrete.

My 2000 Ranger 4x4 was nearly 4K to buy and my best guess is that I’m getting close to that much invested. I’m going to blow past that budget without slowing though, there’s a 5.0 swap in the works.

My 94 F-350 has little invested so far beyond a couple grand to buy, but it needs at least heads done and a little rehab work.
