What's with the Ford part policy?

I went to the Ford dealer this weekend to by a small elbow hose that is part of the PCV system. They looked it up and came back with the complete PCV tube with the both hoses on each end of it. I told the guy I only needed the one hose. He looked it up again and told me the only engine that has just the hose available is the 4.6L engine.

They wanted almost $40 to replace a little hose because only the complete PCV tube and hoses are available as an assembly. This sucks because the original hose seems to have been defective or under engineered from the factory. This kind of part should last for more than 6 yrs without turning to a bad chewing gum consistency.

Is this the trend for parts today? What's next, need an intake manifold gasket but have to by a new intake manifold with it?

BTW, I told them they could keep their part. I went home and cleaned the hose up very well then applied a thick layer of silicone on the exterior of the hose. Once it cured, my problem was solved. I expect the repair to outlast the original hose.

That's nothing new. Ford has been doing that for years.

If you want to buy cheap parts, either you get a massive markup, you have to buy them as part of an assembly, or you have to buy 10 of them (or some combination).

I'd check out Help! first. Or a junkyard. You can buy hoses cheaply as bulk (use "emissions hose"), and get the elbow from Help!
