My credo
The perfect is the enemy of the good.
On the '97, noticed this, (the thing that looks like a mini-shock absorber) - looks like a part you'd use on a trunk or hood
Can't find in manual yet
Not part of suspension per se (?)
It's only on the driver side, do not see it on passenger side

Cool, thanks, Ron.

Now that make sense that I've seen a picture.

Only found on the 4.0l engines, yes, only on drivers side, its a torque/vibration damper

James --- yours is in a lot better shape than mine was (emphasis on "WAS."):p

Somewhere around here I should still have the one I took off my 92, and as bad as yours looks, that one was worse. Bolts oddly came apart though, I was expecting to have to cut it off for as bad as it looked.

Another manufacturer put those on the engines too, I cannot remember who though. We always just took them off when they went bad and never replaced it with no ill results.

I seem to remember Honda and Nissan having something similar on some of their engines.

I think my 85 Mercedes om617 had vibration dampeners like that.

Not that it really had much vibration or torque.
