Whats the difference in the 4.0 auto and the 4.0 with a 5 speed?

I got a 4.0 with a 5 speed. I found a motor for it out of an explorer with an auto trans. Am I going to notice any difference in the power band or any changes at all??

It all depends on how you drive it. all my research says the motor are the same spec. that means the only difference is slippage in clutch or in auto bands.

I can only speak for the auto, because that's the only type of Ranger I've driven. I recently looked up both transmissions in the Tech Library, and while both are 5-speed, the gear ratios are a little different for each.

That wouldn't effect the engine itself though.

There are quite a few 4spd automatic Ex's running around too.

You don't think that transmission gear ratios affect the power band?
And you're right, he didn't specify a year to know whether he's talking about the 4 or 5 speed.

The transmission ratios have ZERO effect on the engine's power characteristics. They do effect what road speeds that power is most available at, but that's a different issue entirely.

Not when the OP is asking about putting an Explorer 4.0 into his 5 spd Ranger.

Sometimes companies change the tuning of engines in automatic vehicles, which is probably why he asked the question.

I used to have a Plymouth Laser with a turbo, had it been an automatic it would have had milder camshafts and thus... less power than a engine set up for a manual transmission.

Didn't the OP ask about the difference in the 4.0L Engine, not the transmission?

Edit - I believe the only thing different with the AT and MT computer is the MT computer will shut off fuel injector firing at zero throttle above 2000rpm... The AT computer doesn't... Somoene correct me if I'm wrong...

Yep, which makes all this a moot point. The engines are identical.

It isn't 2000rpm it's more like 1600rpm.

In the ENGINE? the difference in the engine is restricted to
1991-1992 engines (there were no 1990 5sp 4.0's)
And the camshafts is slightly different.

Ibut the difference isn't lift or duration, the cam on the 5sp 4.0's is KEYED differently to advance the camshaft by a couple of degrees to build low end torque a little more quickly because the 5sp doesn't benefit from the torque multiplication of the torque converter below it's stall speed.

on a 1993-up? there is no difference.

I had read an article that said the camshafts were different between the auto and the 5 speed. I dont remember if it specified model years. My ranger is a 93 5 speed. The replacement is out of a 94 explorer automatic. Engine specific, is there a difference?
