What's the best tranny

So I got a m5od for 125 with transfer case. Am I going to need a gasket inbetween the tranny and t case? Is replacing the front and rear seal easy and a good thing to do while it's out?

I didn't put a gasket back there when I took my transfer case off, just a little RTV. The M5OD is a dry tailhousing, but i put the RTV there just as some insurance. Keep the dirt/road grime out.

I don't think there is a gasket between the trans and transfer case. I believe you seal it up with RTV.

Yes, replacing the front and rear seals would be a good idea. And yes, they are pretty easy to replace.

While you have it out I would pull the top cover, drain the trans and then wash out any metal filings with brake cleaner. You might want to swap out the shifter bushings while it's out as well. Cost is about $14.00 for the bushing kit. Remember to use automatic transmission fluid for the transmission, do not use gear oil.

X2 to above, it's worth the trouble if your doing the swap

Ordered a seal and gasket kit last night along with a shifter rebuild kit $40 for everything

The M5OD-R1 trans is a "dry" transmission, because it has a little seal on the output shaft

In specific a Federal-Mogul P/N 1981 seal.

But that seal is also failure prone.

And some "fooking rocket scientist" (read: Monumental idiot) at Ford (or Mazda?)
decided to have a litrle drain to allow any oil that gets past that seal to escape.

Look at the rear flange on the Mazda and you'll see a little groove in the mating flange to the T-case

It is critically important to seal that groove with RTV because THAT is the ACTUAL
cause of the overboard oil leaks that are typically blammed on the "three rubber plugs"
on the back end of the shifter cover.

On my own transmission there is a drilled and tapped hole that is filled with
an ALUMINUM screw (loctited in place) cut off and filed smooth.
to make sure the RTV stays where it is needed.

IF that chamber is sealed you can only "lose" about a pint of ATF into that void.
and once that void is full the "loss" of any further fluid will cease.
