Hi folks, im in the process of working on my newly aquired 1991 ford ranger. Its equipped with a 4.0 OHV V6 and a 5 spd. Its a 2WD , regular cab .... Im happy with the trucks performance thus far but im looking for a fuz more power. Im planning to add hedman headers with y-pipe and a single high flow 2.5” cat converter and exhaust as well as a comp cams 410 cam.
Now that ive supplied some info, what computer tuning device can I use? Ive seen the piggy back ”Jet Brand” plug in tuner. But is it worth the $247 dollars? Just wanted to see what you all might reccomend.... Thanks, Joe

247 is probably the cheapest you will find for a tuner or programmer. And I think jet is the only one who makes one for the older rangers. I know superchips does not or diablo. But there is a few other makers out there that might.

It's been a few days, so I don't know if you still care, but I was able to have an SCT Eliminator switch chip burned for my 94. It was less than $300. Most guys that deal those will tell you that you can't do anything with them, but if give them the names of the definition files, they might be able to do something. I had to do some serious digging around to find the files for mine. I think I still have them wrote down somewhere if you want them. I don't know if they are the right ones for your 91, but it's worth a shot.

My understanding is the older rangers ( OBD1 ) get some benefit from those if they are a automatic but not much if standard. Regardless after much reading to get real gains out of the 4.0 it seems like you have to do a couple of things together to get anywhere. I was sad coming from GM cars where a $200 mod make a noticeable difference :-( .

Careful remember these engines Lack the good oiling on top of the engine and you can where out the cam and the rockers so be careful

Thanks for the tips guys..... I been away for a bit , lost my password....anyway got around to changing it finally. Im contemplating pulling my engine in the spring and give it a thorough overhaul. Luckily its in great condition now but with 112,000+ on the odometer im hesitant on performing a bunch of performance mods...

James duff sells chips, and not sure how good the 4.0 chip is but I loved my 2.9 chip from duff
