What's luckiest break a cop has given you?

Wish we had cops like that around here. Everything's done by the numbers. Cops are like used car salesmen here, they'll add as many charges and as many fines to you as they think you'll let them get away with.

One of my speeding tickets I was doing 34 in a 25. The cop said if I just mailed the payment in without going to court he'd make it a 29 in a 25.

The problem with that is 1mph-9mph over the limit is the exact same charge/fine in my state. Sneaky f#*@er. I don't fall for that crap anymore.

Lucky Break from a cop

I had just gotten my driver's license 6 or 7 months before, and I was 16. The state of Ohio has a law that any minor under 18 that gets a ticket auto-matically has to appear in court and he/she can lose their license or get probation no questions asked.

I wasn't feeling very well (I had a naseauted stomach), and for some dumb reason, thought it would be quicker getting off the Interstate an exit early and traveling through the city vs. getting off the highway a couple blocks from my house.

It was a Saturday morning (1 o'clock, I think), and I was doing 70+ in a 40 mph zone on a one lane each direction road that wasn't very populated. Anyway, a cop passed me, and I immediately started slowing down, and thinking, "Oh, shit". He pulled me over and politely asked me, "If I knew how fast I was going" and he asked me why (He said he clocked me at 65 mph in a 40).

It was a moment that I didn't know if I should tell the truth or not, so I said, "I'm not really feeling well, and I'm in a hurry to get home".

Very surprisingly, he let me off with a warning and said something to the effect of, "You could have lost your license you just got. You know you would have had to go downtown". I said, "Yes, sir I'm sorry".

Talk about Wow! But, it did teach me a lesson. Even to this day, I rarely speed.

I got my ass pulled over in this little hick town on I90 in Washington... Cle Elum.
I had to stop for gas, and its like 3:30am, Im driving home from a concert.(its a long drive to Canada. lol) I was doing 55 in a 25 zone trying to find my way back to the damn highway, when a cop comes out from around a blind corner and pulls me over...
And I am driving my friends car, who isn't even with me on the trip. Better yet, the car is registered in his mothers name... So here is a car full of teenagers, in a car with registration that has no visible relation to anyone there.

Long story short, after damn near being arrested for stealing a car, I got let off with just a warning.

One of my friends has been pulled over 24 times now, and only received 6 tickets...
One of the times (the worst, maybe?) he was racing down a 4-lane road, on a steep hill, swerving around traffic and crossing the center line while doing twice the speed limit... Cops took 6 blocks to catch up to him close enough he saw their lights and pulled over. And all he gets is a warning.

I was 16, riding an unlicensed scooter with no license plate to speak of, down a back street in Centralia, WA. A sheriff pulled me over that had gotten up on the wrong side of the bed that morning. He. was. pissed. He ran the plate and obviously came up with someone elses name. He asked if I had any paperwork, "No". He asked "How do I know you didn't steal this bike?" I pleaded with him that I wasn't a thief and explained that I had gotten it off a trustworthy friend who had gotten it from the original owner (registered owner). He then proceded to tear down the bike explaining all of the violations he could write me for, which was plenty, lol. Then he said he was going back to his car and to wait. He was in the car FOREVER! Then he came back, redder in the face with anger than before and said, "The only reason your not getting a $1500 ticket today is because my computer just broke! Now I'm gonna let you go, but your gonna walk that bike home (about 5 miles) and if see you on it again your getting pinched!" So I walked the bike home, happy he didn't give me a ticket, but even more happy that he didn't check my backpack in the milkcrate that had an ounce of weed in it!!! Young and dumb....

i was so lucky

It was a friday night i was in a bad mood i was drivin my 84 b2000 i was doin 75 in a 35 for about 2.5 miles than took a roundabout at 50 which will almost make u pee urself in a stock 84 2 wd b2000. well come to find out them headlight belonged to a local cop car i just knew i was screwed i had no good reason and really didnt say anything to defend myself they took my info went back to the cruser and made me wait 20 mins i just knew backup was commin to take me to jail than they came back and gave me a warning:icon_confused:i dont know how or why i was let off but i didnt question them they left and i did to sloooolyyyy

3 years ago I was pulled over for speeding 65 in a 55 zone and had a tag light out and my exhaust was too loud and I had dark covers on my tail lights, cop got out came up to me and said well! You got a tag light out and were haulin ass why? I said I gotta poop. He said ok be safe and oh 1 more thing nice ranger!

I was in my '93 Escort hatchback, it had a pretty snappy 1.9L that I had molested a bit. I was in a HUGE hurry (used to have bad roommates and was told by a friend that I needed to be home NOW) and the speedometer was well beyond buried, probably had it around up to ~120ish and I left foot braked into a corner (not to slow down, but to turn in a little sharper - was still in the throttle) and got it out to like a 35 degree slip angle on accident, opposite lock and steering with the brakes. Cop was coming in the opposing lane... Apparently he was impressed with my driving or something because he didn't even flash his lights at me!

Before you ask "Wtf, it's the slowest escort ever!" I could lose SVX's and newer Mustang GTs on twisty back roads with that little POS, auto tranny and all. Used to time trial it on logging roads.

Forgot my favorite one - I had a '77 L-82 'Vette with a wicked nasty motor in it. 350 4-bolt that was completely built and lots of money everywhere in it, from the sump to the valve covers. Shaved, blueprinted, ported, cammed, and lakepipes! It was light blue, t-tops, white leather interior, and spit fire. Base shift point for 1-2 upshift was 55mph, so no matter what you did, it was LOUD. Every time you saw a cop while driving this car, you got a really lucky break if you did not get pulled over. Hit rev limiter at 180mph, no desire to go any faster. It was NOT a Sunday driver, it was a "trailer it to the car show because it's too stupid to drive" kinda car. Well, anyways, I was out in it, and there was a long line of cars in front of me on a 2-lane country road. They were going a little under the speed limit. Well, I ripped past, and the 2nd car from the front was a Maine State Trooper. I let off, and he looked over, and I barked a little fire out the exhaust. He only flicked his headlights, didn't pull me over.

Shortly later that car got dismantled and sold in pieces, it was not really meant to be driven anyways, it really needed a cage and harnesses - which it was too pretty for that.

i ran on my banshee i was hill climbing somewhere we knew we shouldn't and are not aloud. i was the last to leave and i passed all of em(5 other quads). i love my banshee. we got caught cop said he was going 80 and he wasn't gaining. got trespassing ($150) and he was nice told us if he saw us there again he was crushing the quads and we would be in jail. needless to say we ride legal now. it was the quad in my profile pic. anyways i ran 88mph in the quarter i shit my pants haha and it wasent maxxed

How about the break you didn't get? Shortly after I turned 17 I was driving 25 miles (33min) to and from work after school. I got tired of the long drives quick, so after I turned off the main highway and onto the smaller one that led to my rural small town I would speed it up (Only about 8min at 55mph). 75--85mph usually, because it was after 10pm and the road was empty. After two weeks a cop got me, I still believe one of the three houses on that road set me up.

Anyway, cop said if I had been doing 10 over he would've let me go. Fast forward a year and a half a trucking company turned me down over the ticket. Went from making $45-50k only 5 months out of school to making $12/hr at a grocery store. I guess I learned my lesson lol

One of both for you:

The bad:
2nd car was a Dodge (Mitsubishi Colt), for which the speedometer cable was coiled spring, not solid wire. So, speedometer would lag while the cable uncoiled, then reach steady state on read correct. When you slowed down/stopped, the speedometer would slowly make its way down.

So, Sunday morning, left Grandma's after lunch head home and the highway was empty. So I accelerated to a speed that sounded/felt about right. And of course, there's the cops running the other way. I get pulled over and explain to him the issue with the speedo. I pointed out it was still reading 35mph but slowly decreasing.

He said the judge might reduce the ticket by cost of repairs - but repairs cost more than the car. When Colt needed gas, you popped the hood, added a quart, filled the tank and then checked the oil to see if it needed another quart or not.

The good:
3rd car was a Dodge Omni; dad who would pinch a nickel until the beaver sh!t, sprung for a set of winter tires for me. But he wouldn't buy any of those new fangled radial, he bought D78-13s for me. I knew they were a little larger than the stock 165/80R13s, but if I drove the speed limit, I seemed to be fine.

So, I was leaving Calgary to go home, we descend a hill and there at bottom are cops. But let's backup - a couple km up the road, there are the mileage posts which allow you to calibrate your speedometer. The GF, was also an engineering student, had calculator out figuring out just how off the speedometer was. When the cop comes over, he asks how fast were you going; I tell him I though I had let the car accelerate to about 110 down the hill. At which point the GF, punches it into the calculator and responds that would put me a little over 125. And a 25 over limit ticket was going to be serious money for a starving student.

But the cop is laughing at my all to apparent discomfort, so told me to slow down and only wrote me a warning.

I replaced my 99 3.0 Duratec Taurus with a 2002 Focus ZX5. The Taurus had some power, the ZX5 not so much. Climbing hills on the highway the Focus would lug down and drop to 3rd gear, then crest the hill at 65 mph cranking 4500 rpms which drove me nuts. I got in the habit of rolling into the throttle before hills to gain speed so I could ease out of the gas and trick the transmission into staying in overdrive. My son and I were headed to Carlisle the end of May- just after he got his license back after a 1 year suspension under NH's new habitual offender law because of points accumulated with speeding tickets. I was doing my avoid downshifting trick on the hills near Brattleboro,Vt and saw the blue lights come on, there was a cruiser sitting in the police turn around. I looked down and saw I was going 85. My son was grinning ear to ear and said I was going to get a ticket. When the cop came to my window he asked where we were going in such a hurry so I told him my story about preventing a downshift. He got a blank look on his face and went back to the cruiser with my license and registration. He came back, gave me my stuff and a written warning, saying"let it downshift". I think if you tell them something they've never heard before they let you go.

I got a story from my young and dumb days.... I was street racing in a 04 dodge stratus (the Mitsubishi coupe, not the ugly 4 door chyrsler junk) it had a pretty peppy inline 4 with a flowmaster exhaust and CAI. I was racing my then GF, now my wife in her 97 mustang gt one night. We were just messing around on the 2 lane highway and then it start getting above 100 mph. We turned onto a state route and we were going every bit of 120mph and we passed 2 state troopers the opposite way at 120 mph... I was ahead of her so I just kept on going and so did she. We never saw them staties again so they either didn't see the flash of lights go by or we were going so fast that they figured they'd be scraping us off the highway later. I know some cops are married with children so anything over 120 they wont even bother lol. So a trip from town that normally takes 20-25 minutes one way was done in 7 minutes... We were HAULING ASS the whole time. SHE was pissed bc her v8 got beat by a 4 cylinder... God I miss that car. It was a great little cruiser. I did burn outs and 70-80 mph everywhere I went and still got close to 30 mpg.

My 98 Ranger has Hellwig sway bars front and rear. Redid all the end links a few years ago. Anyhow, was swooping around my favorite set of curves, running 75 in a 45. When I spot a black-and-white coming at me in the opposite lane. So I slowed down and pulled off the road. The officer, a female, came up a minute or so later. I gave her my trucks papers, she said "thanks for stopping and not making me chase you. What was the hurry?" Told her "just out enjoying the road and the day." She said "I'll write it as a ten over, won;t go on your record and no insurance issues, because you pulled over." $166.00. Oh well. Easy come, easy go. I still speed, every chance I get.

When i was 17 I had a 77 LTD II 4 door with a rather hot 351W in it.

I ran from the cops who were driving those crappy early 80s fairmont based LTDs, he couldnt catch me.

Till i turned a corner, hammered it, and it coughed, sputterd and died. I ran the SOB outta fuel.

At that time down south...they simply called my dad who dueled out punishment that the law enforcement communites worse would of paled in comparision.
