Alrighty, I'm finally getting around to converting my 99 Ranger to a Carbbed 302. This is what I am looking at doing

302 w/ 4x4 AOD w/ NP205 Twin Stick w/ Ford 9" Rear End.

Front end will be done at a later date, so I'll either run without 4x4 for a while or hook it up and see how little it takes to blow up my front end.

Everything I look at is at using the Mustang AOD's instead of the 4x4AOD's. Is there a problem with using the 4x4 AOD's?

big mistake, use explorer setup and the stronger 4r70w.a wreck will be a complete bolt in.no extra parts needed

yeah if i was you, i would go with fuel injection too, harder to hook up, much easier to maintain. Im going fuel injection when i get a blower. 9in rear sounds good also

'99 Ranger 4x4 + '99-'01 Explorer V8 = almost bolt-in, plug-in swap

i understand the idea between Plug n Go, but at the same time I'm not too concerned with that.

has anyone dealth with a AOD 4x4 tranny instead of using the AOD and converting it using the Advanced Adapters kit?

i blew 3 aod into worthless cores.the 4r70w is the strongest 4x4 aod.otherwise your using a c6 based od trans out of an f150 e40d or 4000r

what is the tranny size difference between that and the aod?

I *believe* the AOD is considered on par with a C4, the next toughest is a C5, and the heaviest/toughest is a C6. Often put in work type trucks. I have heard that the C6 consumes 25hp all by itself, just to turn it! bleh

I wish I could give you more feedback on the AOD, but I and having grief with my engine, thus i'm not driving the AOD.

For the record 4r70w is computer controlled though, and will not work with a carburated engine. It would be great with the Explorer drivetrain you mentioned earlier. I have no complaints with the one in my F-150.

The C5 is pretty much a C4 with a different torque converter and was mainly found in 83-84 RBV's before being replaced by the A4LD.

I am planning on running an AOD with a NP208 behind my 289, but I haven't managed to snag either yet. I have heard the later non AODE ones are a decent transmission.
