What would make a good mud truck?

yup....chevys work well too,and dodges.

i've found that the diesels are not good bogger engines as they are just too heavy, though the torque is great.diesel trucks had a tendency to dig in the front and shear off axles.

big block gas engines that can rev some while still pulling hard in the bottom seems to be the ticket, but tires are what really dictate how everything will be set up.

There are some places where itll never be big enough. Whether or not that stuff will cut it depends on his application, he never said he was going competition. I am just assuming he dont wanna mud his DD. So he needs somethig capable that he can beat on. If he had asked for a set of 5 ton rockewells and 56's it would have been a different story. What I suggested is a dedicated mud rig for the average joe. Not everyone can fab insane shhyt like you do LOL>

i understand this,but i'm not talking competition.

for me and the gang it was just a get-together on sundays(every sunday....summer,winter,didn't matter).what tended to happen was that if you had a truck that was too small, you always had to bug the guys with the big trucks to pull you out.when i crossed that line from the one doing the asking to the one being asked it was somehow satisfying.

this one was a well set up bronco,it had the front frame of an f350 grafted onto the rear frame of the bronco,d 60s and 44 boggers pushed by a mildly built 429.

this was why i asked if it was a dedicated mud machine or just something for the occasional dip.....it really makes a difference.

see...even a pontiac astre can be a good mud rig.

for those more competition oriented, something like this may be the ticket.

and yup...even a chevy can do it.

He did say dedicated mud rig, but not extreme, we dont have mudholes like that over on this side, least few and far between, tehres some, but not many. Ive been in the situation of being the guy pulled out alot, and very few times have i pulled anyone out, but to me a dedicated mud rig is something I dont drive on the road, but not necesarily 8 inches of lift with 44's either. I would consider a stripped b2 on 37's a dedicated mud rig if thats all i used it for. We have a few hole here that can swallow whole trucks but we stay away from them if we know where they are.

I guess the OP will just have to BE MORE SPECIFIC PLEASE, LOL.

To SAS and put a V8 in a Ranger you will either need a running and driving donar or a couple dead ones. IMO I would rather just get a decent 3/4 or 1 ton and run with it for a mud truck. One with some age on it isn't really all that much more $$ than a running Ranger.

I am probably in $1k or better just getting the engine and tranny together for my Ranger, and neither are rebuilt. Not counting the truck itself, carb, driveshafts, axles, exhaust...

More clarification guys, I live by youngstown, Ohio. The only places to ride are Yankee Lake, Hillsville, and Wellsville (besides a few illegal inner city trails). I want something bigger then a Ranger/bII. I love my Ranger, I just would rather have something more spacious. The tire size I'm thinking of is in the 35-37 range. I would really like to do this with a Fullsize Bronco. There are several in my area that just sit in peoples yards or on the side of the road by repair shops, and are never fixed up. Whatever I get has to have room to fit a decent amount of people. With a Bronco I could rig something in the bed/back area for more people to ride along. I'm not looking for anything thats over kill. At this point I think I could live with a normal stock drivetrain Bronco, with a 4-6in suspension, 2-3in body lift, and 35s.

this souds about right as a starting point...that's why i posted this:

the 78/79 bronco is a good starting point.it can run 35 or 36'' tires with the stock drivetrain, and they can still be found fairly cheap.

later, when you are ready to spend some money it's an easy one to swap a 460 into, and you can hunt for a trashed f350 to donate a 10.25 and 60.with these axles you can run 44'' tires but still may have to upgrade the outers on the 60 if you are going to push it hard.

I had just what you needed to get started for sale a few months ago......
460/C6/205
60 front
12.5 rear
44-18.50 Monster Mudders
Was trying to give it away on here for $1300 for all (my 13 year old had a little crash riding my oldest sons 500 Polaris, about $1300 in damage and my wife kinda freaked out when I wanted to start another truck)
4 Wheelrs fixed, wife is clamed down so Im gonna sit on the parts till i can find a first gen extened cab Ranger I can gut.

my buddys 82 duramax got stuck in big iced over, rutted pit today. but yea guys, I'm gonna find a Bronco to start with. I just need a little more cash.
