4X4 seems to be inop. When I push dash button(4x4) light on switch, dash both come on and I can hear a half second "click" at the motor, no front engagement? I tested this by dumping the clutch and looking at thr ground for 4 "patches", is this a VALID TEST???? When I push the 4x4 button the second time it does NOT turn off. If I turn off the truck and restart it the 4x4 shuts off. Low range button does not respond to being pushed. Computer(behind seat) passes the self test. I thought the motor would have made more of a noise,or is just a "click" what I should be hearing??? Anyhow, just for the fun of it? I completely remove to motor, again ,click. Manually engaged transfer case at the selector shaft. It still does not SEEM to be in 4x4??(see test above) Is the front pumpkin torque controlled?? or do I,as I suspect a hub issue? If I understand how this system works, you push the button, that tells the computer to tell the motor to turn the shaft, front driveshaft spins pinion, which forces the differential and axles apart, pushing the axles into the hub splines??? Yes? Am I missing something? Will it funtion properly by just flipping the shaft to the right spot?

If you manually put transfer in 4wd and still nothing then it would be a hub issue.

Puuled the hubs today, wow, these things looked like they haven't been touched since new!! 230,000 miles. Driver side not terrible, but pass. side grease looked like neverseize, splined collar that belongs in hub assb. stayed on stub shaft(junk). So it's at least partially a hub issue, which leads to my next question, If one hub is bad and the other good will that keep both hubs from engaging or should I at least have "3 wheel drive"?? Going to use a friends lift to visually see if all parts are working/moving.

If one hub is broken and the other is working then all the power sent to the front wheels will be sent to the side with the bad hub. Assuming that it has an open diff.

It all becomes so clear to me now!!! poke out 1 eye and they both go blind, what a set-up? Just to sound even more annoying, when truck is on the lift with transfer engaged/trans in gear. Will both front axles be turning regardless of either hub status? I can build a motor blind folded but DKS about 4x4.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get the hub gear of the stub shaft. I thought about a two jaw puller but that would just be pushing on the bottom of the gear bearing? I took the snap ring off but it still would not budge. It appears to be seized in place, two 24 in. pry bars wouldn't ever move it a little. I hesitate to torch it off, would heating it up good get it off without heat damaging the axle. I plan to put the jeep hubs on but have to get this annoying little gear off first

You have to pull the wedge out first or you're gonna F stuff up. Look in tech library for the write up on it.

Thank's. Yeah, I know about the wedge, I wish I could get that far. My biggest problem is getting that !@$%^& gear that is supposed to come off with the hub, is part of the hub assb. I decided NOT to use heat as it may mess up the plastic cam. I plan to score it with a dremel tool and then wack it with a chisel to split it. One thing I'm not clear on, do all the parts for the auto hub get pitched or just the spindle nut? most likely will do the bearings and seals while I'm in there, ain't gonna get any closer!
