New to Rangers, not to Fords.

Bought an inexpensive 93 after my car got stolen, but have had to do lots of work to it. Servicing all the fluids incl PS.

I seem to remember some Ford products at least used to use trans fluid int he PS reservoir.

When I went to swap out the fluid, what was in there was definitely red, looked like either Type F or Mercon.'

One of the first things I always do is to get an oem service manual.

In one place, they list Type F, but in the actual PS section, where it shows how to R&R components, they say to fill with PS fluid.

Kind of wondering being this system is "used to" trans fluid if going with PS fluid will cause any problems, i.e. with seals.

Appreciate any words of wisdom.

Type F is the proper "power steering fluid".

Thank you!

Being what was in there was definitely red and not regular PS fluid, it makes me a little more comfortable to replace it with the same thing, esp since there are no apparent leaks in the system and no funny noises.

Honestly, you can probably get away with leaving it be. The old recirculating ball gear box style doesn't wear the fluid out like rack and pinion setups do.

I'd only change it if you gag when sniff it.
