I have a 97 ranger 4x4 that is automatic. I want to swap it to a 5 speed. Will a 2.9 transmission out of a 91 bronco 2 with a blank transfer case work?

Bolt up, yes. Survive, no. The 4.0 pretty much has to have an M5OD. The vast majority of the 90 BIIs had the FM146, which was the standard issue 5 speed 4x4 2.9L trans from 1988 to 1992.

No, absolutely not. '90 was the last year of the BII.

Alrighty it may be a 90. What is the problem with them. I was thinking it was the m50d instead of the other one.

Explorers had M5ODs.

The FM transmissions are just weak. They grenade behind 2.9Ls. I would hate to see what a 4.0 would do to one.

My 2wd '90 BII had a true 2wd M5od from the factory... You sure that one has the dummy case?

I went and looked at it finally it has 4.0 swap with a 5 speed but it has a dummy transfer case. The motor and trans came from a 4x4 94 ranger.
