i been looking around and i cant seem to find to much info on this topic.. im looking to put a 302 or 351 (whichever i get my hands on first) in my ranger which is a 93 3rd gen and im undecided on what trans is the best option... theres so many that will work.

i was thinking a c4 if i go the auto route but i want to keep 4wd if possible. the one i was thinking would work well would be a M5R2 out of a 90's f150 with a 5.0 in it. the only thing is i have no clue what the acctual differences are bewtean the M5R1 thats already in my ranger to the M5R2 that im looking for.

ive been told just the bellhousing is different to accomidate the bolt pattern on the SB's and ive also been told the gearing is a bit different internally (which i dont mind either way).

if someone could enlighten me on what the "easiest" route is to go on this i would greatly appriciate it. Also keep in mind im open to anything, t-5's, AOD's, whatever would be the easiest trans to come across and install.

i also figure te autos would prolly be the easier way to go and prolly a bit cheaper (im on a tight budget also) due to the fact that im not going to have to mess with the clutch and trying to get the hydraulics to work right and everyting.

Any trans is gonna be custom, so none are decidedly easy. Manual's are a bit harder in general because of clutch issues, but nothing too complex.
The M5R2 from the 97~2003 4.2L F150 has the right bellhousing pattern and puts the shifter basically in stock location, so many people prefer that one.

First, welcome to TRS:icon_thumby: We need a little more info from your truck...Do you have an auto or manual now?? It's usually chaper to stay with what you got the M5OD trans are basically the same, the bellhousing bolt patterns are different and the gearing is different as well between the R1 and R2...What do you do with your rig, DD, long drives, backyard toy?? Give us your driving habits and what you intend to use your truck for, as well as what drivetrain you have now, engine, trans, axles, etc:icon_thumby:

The M5ODR2 will work ok without too much issue if you are keeping the engine pretty mild. It will work with all the current ranger hydraulics as well. Some people dont like going to the older T18, T19 or NP435 because they are external slave and if you don't know what parts to look for they can be a pain to get working. As far as autos if you are going to be on the hiway at all I would suggest something with overdrive. The AOD is the only option that isn't computer controlled. The C4 isn't bad either as long as you are going 65 mph or you'll be spinning the engine at 3500rpm. There are many options to go with just what you want and can find and afford.

at the moment the truck is basically stock with the 4.0 in it. the engine has every issue these things are plauged with and im sick of working on it. im getting my hands on a 1970 351W hopefully tommorow and if that doesnt work out i have a 302 by buddy has that hes looking to dump off. the truck is going to be essentially just a toy/ drive when i feel like it vehicle.. so im trying to keep it as civil and driveable as i can for now, but without limiting the possibility to turn it into a strip truck if i feel the need to do so in the future. im gonna stick with the 8.8 rear till it dies and when it does i have a full host of axles i can throw in it after that. the only thing i really dont want to do is change the whole truck over to a 2wd if i cant get the 4wd working right (thats why i was thinking M5ODR2). but im open to whatever at thins point... but the bigest limiting factor is budget right now

if you want to keep things easy i would go with a 302 the 351 is wider/taller and hits the brake booster although a 3" body lift helps

Find a 86 and down (I think it goes up to 86) ranger or BII 4x4 with a C-5 and 1350 T-Case donor and pull the output shaft, you will have to pull the trans apart to get it out.
Next you need a c-4 to trans plant the output shaft into as it will mate up to the 1350.
You then have a bell housing that mates up to a 302 and drivetrain that mates up to your truck.

hey guys quick question....will the tranny (T-5)out of a 1995 GMC sonoma fit my 1999 exploer 5.0

Tranny will, but bellhousing won't...You will need a bellhousing from a 85-95 mustang , and you will need to fab a hydraulic slave cylinder

It's still a V-6 trans, right? Think one main difference other than the bellhousing is that the mounting holes are "clocked" 15 degs CW, maybe that's just the holes in the bell. Not sure at all about input shaft length and what all it would take. Just get a Ford V-8 trans, even then some are not worth swaping in due to the torque capacity.
