i have a 89 4x4 ranger with a automatic what trans will fit in it . I cant fined a tranny any where around. The salvage yards say i can only get a trans out of a 88-89 ranger or bronco
After a quick bit of research, you're looking for a Ford A4LD, which was used in Rangers until '95, Explorers until '94, and oddly enough, Mazda B-Series (a fraternal twin to the Ranger) until 2002.
The 4R and 5R series transmissions will bolt to, with the proper flex plate.
The problem is the control systems. The 4R and 5R use different electronic control systems, usually integrated into the PCM, and so electronically they won't work with the 2.9L.
i think i will get a 5 speed manual when a4ld's become exstinct... i wonder how much work it'll take to get a 5 speed auto from a newer 4.0 to work on a 2.9...
