Im about to start a 302 swap and the last time my buddy tried it he used a Mazda (M5OD) from a 90s F150 and ended up breaking the tranny trying to put it in. He said it wouldnt fit. Im a fan of manual transmissions and would like to use one can anybody shed some light into this? The motor thats going in is bone stock from a wagon (2 barrel) and I fear that using a C6 would rob alot of power from it. Truck has 410s and Im also worried 3 gears isnt gonna be enough so I can cruise around. What do you guys think?

Anything that bolts to a SBF will work on all reality. Whatever your friend was doing was wrong, those transmissions will fit. Some transmissions need more floor pan/firewall bending than others, a bodylift will solve most of those problems if you desire to install one but not required. If you desire to use the M5 from an F-150 look for one from a V6 post 97 truck. This shifter is in a better location but even if you can't get one the older models still fit. The stock ranger hydraulics will also work with it too. Most people like C4s because of their size and an automatic is pretty straight forward to put in. A C6 will work for you too, they are kinda large but fit fine too. AOD isn't a bad choice and has overdrive. From what you are saying you want overdrive so it isn't worth bringing up the older 4spd manuals. Just remember you will need a fullsize t-case too. The NP205 or 208 are going to be your best that will fit. The 205 is heavy and crappy geared but smaller and strong. The 208 is a little bigger and will take a little massaging to fit.

I just got a np435 with an np208 and going to be using an 87 clutch setup with it all. All will be put behind my 91 302 that I am converting to HO.

I ran an np435 with an np205 in my last v8 ranger, used the stock master cylinder with a toyota landcruiser slave cylinder, fit like a glove, and the low first gear was great

i just used an m5r2 out of a 98 f150 with the 4.2 v6. as is right not with 31s and 3.73s and mild 5.0 efi i am getting 17-18 mpg with very mixed driving(play, stop and go and steady 55)

What year and where did you get this part from? I might look into it. Did you notice an advantage to running this over the ford slave?
