Hello everybody. I'm new here to this forum. My names John and I am from Los Angeles. I am currently in the market for a 2008 Ranger Supercab XLT 2 wheel drive. This will not be my daily driver and will be a fun truck and for occasional utility reasons. Just the occasional jolt to Home Depot or when I want to go bike riding. For this reason I think a 4 cylinder model will do. I would like to know how the automatics work with that little engine? Should I go for the manual? What is a good price to pay these days for a 2008? The trucks I am looking for typically carry sticker prices between 18 and 20 thousand dollars. I was told by one dealer that he would knock off 3 grand on an '08 right off the bat but I think I can get better. Just want a little input. Thank you:bye:

1st off welcome to trs. you could also try to find one with just a few miles on it but all the stuff you want. the depreciation can be quite substantial in the first few years of its life. you are right to go for a super cab imo. i like the manual with the 4cyl.. no experience with auto trans.
you can also play dealers against each other. the buyer is definitely in the favored position now. if i were to be looking for a new or almost new model i would for sure be a very tough negotiator.

good luck on your search.

Screw auto. Even in the stop-go of LA, the 2.3 will never be good enough with the auto imo. the ranger clutch for the 2.3 is so light you wont have any problems with sore clutch leg. But, It's your truck, so do what suits your needs and wants. Dont let someone's opinion have so much of a permanent effect on your vehicle. It's up to you.

The stop and go of LA, exactly, most of the retards in this state go out and buy a nice car with alot of HP and have to sit in 3 hours of traffic to drive it home. But then we have the MEN who go out and buy a PSD and a porsche as a weekend car. Cali is the best though:yahoo:

Don't underestimate the regularcab 2.3L ranger. I'm was dead set on getting a supercab before I *settled* on my '08 2.3L regular cab manual last year. I've really grown to love the shorter wheel base. It's way better on gas than the 4L, it's got alot of power for a smaller engine, and the truck weighs less. Add all these together with a shoter wheel base and you got a really nice city truck. Remember, in the city you're doing alot of backing up and fitting your truck into tighter spaces (parallel parking), so the shorter wheelbase really helps. The only thing I miss is being able to crank my seat back when I'm sitting in my truck waiting for something. That's a big minus, but as far as storage is concerned... I haven't really *needed* to stuff anything in my truck that didn't fit on the passenger seat or in a plastic container in the box (I have a locking canopy, too).

The manual trans on the Rangers is really easy and comfortable to operate. I don't find myself getting too annoyed when I have to shift often in busy traffic. I feel much more "in-tune" with my truck with the manual.

If they had an FX4 supercab with a shorter box and the same wheelbase as the regular cab rangers, that would be really cool.

Jesus Christ, what is with people reviving old threads lately? The OP probably found a truck 4 months ago.
