:icon_confused: i want to run some bigger tires but dont know if i should regear locker it or maybe save up a little longer and do bolth any advice what to do what to buy ect.
thanks

well, for starters, were gonna need just a little more info from you.
engine? current gear ratio? current and desired tire sizes? intended use (off-road, prerunner, mall crawler,...)?

You have to do both axles (gears) at once anyway if you want to be able to use your 4WD.

I would save up and do the lockers together with the gears, as the axles will already be apart, you shouldn't incur any additional labor charges by having them installed at the same time.

well im planning on running 35's but i dont know a whole lot about gearing i know i seriosly want a locker though but dont know what gears to re-do and i know ill have to do bolth axles at once.
also i dont know what arb or lunchbox locker are i know a guy with a detroit locker and he swears by it but i dont know if i can honestly take his advice he drives a chev

this is my dialy driver also and will probably wheel in mud, sand, and a little bit of hill climbing

i was thinking about an ox locker but dont know a whole lot about the company i dont really want an air locker though

If your truck is 4wd get 4.88s since they are the deepest for the IFS D35, if its a 2wd get 4.88s if its a 4.0 and 5.13s if it's a smaller engine. Lockers are a personal preference. A lunchbox locker installs in place of the spider gears, a full carrier locker replaces the original carrier. If you're going with a full carrier locker, Detroits and ARBs are hard to beat, I've heard some bad things about OX. I prefer automatic lockers, no wires/air lines/cables to fuss with, never have to think about it and I like them on the street because I hate open diff one wheel peel.

if your really in the scrap hole and plan on SWAPING, REBUILDING, or just dont care you can always weld the rear spider gears, but if its your DD like you said i wouldnt but just wait for the extras cash to do it the RIGHT way. I welded mine as my DD and drove 500+ miles a week on it highway, city and wheeling. Just went through tires quicker(3 week rotation schedual kept them longer) and had to be a lot more careful in the rain, but to me it was worth it and im still running a welded rear this day.

alright ill probably save up to regear to 4.88s and a locker im not interested in welding the rear end i cant afford to **** anything up real bad and i guess i have some time to figure out what locker i want to run

Building a truck is a process.

If you have never wheeled before, you start small. Throw some 31s or 32s on there and wheel it as is.

Once you learn your truck and how to wheel, you add some lift and even bigger tires and wheel it until you understand how much it sucks to not have lower gears.

Then you can add a locker and get through more stuff.

Once you realize that yes you can get it done with out gears, but it would be much easier and you could get it done BETTER with gears, You have reached the time to regear.

This is the way that I see it. It is stupid to just take a truck and lift lock and gear it without takeing the time to learn how to wheel with out lift lockers and gears.

Thats part of what makes the dffference between an idiot wheeler and a skilled wheeler.

i have wheeled it and its not like im buying a truck and dumping $5000 in it just to wheel im talking down the road im just getting a good idea and if im putting a locker in it i just figured i would regear while im in there im not gonna lift it without locking or regearing though its just stupid for people to drive around in trucks with substantioly bigger tires and not lock or regear they have no power you got to remember its my dialy driver

I agree. PLEASE use punctuation, it hurts my head to read your posts.

so bassicaly i want you guys to just give me some feed back on different lockers. I'm curious what your running or, what brands and types of lockers you heard good things about. I didnt start this post to get criticized on how i go about building my truck and, learning to wheel it.

You're on the right track for building a dual purpose truck. When it comes to lockers, basically quality is directly related to price. The more you're willing to shell out, the better quality you can get. Detroit, ARB, Locrite and Ected are pretty popular. As stated before, Detroit is automatic, which means it engages on it's own when it senses too much wheel spin, so you don't have to worry about it. ARB and Ected are selectable, they're driver controlled. ARB uses air compression which means it must also have a small air compressor routed to it. Ected is electric, so wiring will have to be run there too. Selectables are more expensive and more labor intensive to install but have some of the most positive feedback. Downsides of selectables are that you have to remember to engage them, and when wheeling there are a lot of things going on at once, especially if wheeling with a manual transmission. Automatics like Detroit have the downside of only engaging when they sense it's time to, which also means that at times they can lock up going around a sharp corner on a wet road. That gets dangerous and makes turning a lot more difficult. But like it has been stated, it's personal preference. Do your research and find what works best for you.
