so the transmission(a4ld) in my ranger is slipping and im debtaing if it is worth trying to fix or if i should sell it and look at financing a newer ranger. i really believe in having a truck that i built rather than one that i bought but im not sure if its really worth it at this point. im also gunna be moving in the next couple months so i have to take whats financial best in to account; not to mention dependability. any suggestions would be greatly appreciatted.

Sounds like you're in a good position to swap in a manual. No more slipping with the a4ld, plus it'll be a truck that you built, at least part of it. Would also be a lot cheaper than buying a whole new truck. Just my idea.

I'd have to second the manual swap Idea.

I haven't done it, but from what I hear, it is not a very hard swap.
I will be doing it when my A4LD goes out.

From what I know, you need the tranny (M5OD-R1 or R2), pedal mount/ pedals, and maybe the computer form the parts truck. If you do it, make sure you get a 4wd tranny if you have a 4wd, and a 2wd if you have a 2wd truck. The hole is already in the floor any everything.
Not only would you be getting rid of the troubled A4LD, you would be getting a more reliable manual, and probably get 1-2mpg better than the auto (don't qoute me on that, it's just what I've heard).

how much would i be lookin at for the swap? my gf's dad does trannys and he said he can help me out with whatever i need and use his shop.

Help like that is hard to find. You should take advantage of it. Doesn't hurt to show some skills, and a willingness to learn some more, to the GF's daddy either!! Hard to tell how much it'll cost, call the wrecking yards for parts prices or keep checking Craigslist for a cheep donor truck..get more parts that way..

Ya definitely. If you're going to do a manual swap you'll want to pick up a whole donor truck to go with it. Never know what other miscellaneous parts you will need and that's much easier with an entire vehicle sitting right there. Zorro just finished a manual swap with great details on the work. Good luck if you decide this.

sweet guys. thanks for all the help. i'll let ya all know how it goes once i get all the parts and get it all together
