A friend gave me a 302 out of his early '80's Bronco. It was a "Marshall" rebuilt engine that broke the crank between 1 and 5. I was figuring it would be a ho-hum 130hp flat tappet weezer at best and I would just throw it in my ever growing iron pile.
I get there and it is a roller with E6 heads, absolutely no ring groove and the heads and intake valley look brand new. No sludge, no grime, just clean gray cast iron. Aparently Marshall is pretty loose on what gets what engine if it came out of an early 80's Bronco. The heads, timing cover and oilpan are off and the front main cap and stub of the crankshaft is gone. It looks like water got in the bores before they got around to tearing it apart and they are kinda crusty, I think they would probably clean up. Pistons look pretty new, .040 overbore so punching it out more isn't really an option.
So is it worth dinking with or off to the iron pile? That it is a like new rebuild (aside from being majorly broken
) roller is making me want to back up on junking it...
