A friend gave me a 302 out of his early '80's Bronco. It was a "Marshall" rebuilt engine that broke the crank between 1 and 5. I was figuring it would be a ho-hum 130hp flat tappet weezer at best and I would just throw it in my ever growing iron pile.

I get there and it is a roller with E6 heads, absolutely no ring groove and the heads and intake valley look brand new. No sludge, no grime, just clean gray cast iron. Aparently Marshall is pretty loose on what gets what engine if it came out of an early 80's Bronco. The heads, timing cover and oilpan are off and the front main cap and stub of the crankshaft is gone. It looks like water got in the bores before they got around to tearing it apart and they are kinda crusty, I think they would probably clean up. Pistons look pretty new, .040 overbore so punching it out more isn't really an option.

So is it worth dinking with or off to the iron pile? That it is a like new rebuild (aside from being majorly broken :D) roller is making me want to back up on junking it...

I say mess with it, never know when it can come in hand.

5 and 6 are what has me the most worried... it seems more scaley than actual pitting though.

Those cylinder walls look pretty ugly from what I can see. If it's been punched 40 already, I think you might be wasting your time. I'd sell those heads though.

302 blocks are fairly common. I would take the good and start fresh if you were already gunna rebuild it. Out here you can find a clean block for 100 bucks

I say pull it apart, clean it up and run it! So what if it has some poc marks its only gonna lose a lil pressure. Clean it up get a new used crank then run it till it blows or you get another motor with more power. I bet it'll run for years with out a issue other than a lil bit lower comp in a cylinder.

Pull those two pistons down as low as you can and fill them with marvel and let it sit for a day. They may clean up.

I might try to save the pistons and see what I have after that. They look pretty new and are $20 a pop on Summit... I am too much of a kaniver to let them go :icon_twisted:

By then I would have a pretty good idea what potential the bores have as well.

I would love to sell the heads but if two sets of anything fall in my lap they are probably not worth much.
