2002 3.0L Ranger XLT. Colder than a witches *** this morning, 3 F. Drove around for a few errands so truck warmed up. Stopped to gas up the truck. Got back inside and truck would not start for nothing! So there I sat at the gas pump.

Called my favorite tow truck company (bad when they know you by first name). They said they'd be out directly. Waited a good 15 minutes but no tow truck.

Gave it one more try and Ranger fired right up.

So what the heck happened? Need I be concerned?

With those symptoms I would imagine evap purge valve is stuck open flooding the thing...

Did it crank and not start....

Or would it not crank?

Oh it would crank just fine but didn't even try to start. The truck has been starting just fine since then.

So what and where is an evap purge valve? I could believe it was flooded. Probably why it started after setting for a time.

I was afraid the fuel pump had died but my only fuel pressure gauge is under the truck and I just couldn't see me crawling under there to look. I keep telling myself to install a fuel pressure gauge under the hood but that will have to wait for warmer weather.

It goes in the tube from the charcoal canister (under the bed I believe) to the intake manifold, catches evaporated hydrocarbons from the fuel tank and feeds them to the engine, they can stick open and cause that, not a huge thing on Rangers that I've heard of but it's a thing on other stuff...

The location varies from vehicle to vehicle but the best place to start is at the evap canister just in front of the spare tire.

Assuming that purge valve to be stuck open and not a problem until now, was the flooding related to having just refilled the gas tank?

Possibly. How do you fill the tank? Run the nozzle until it clicks and stop? Run it another click then stop? Over filling the tank can mess with the evap system.

Yup, probably over filled it.
