old dual exhaust rusted out. what size pipe should i use form cat back this time? that will give it a nice deep throaty sound? no muffler it will be straight piped

You want deep and throaty, put on a flow 44. You want something that is loud, obnoxius and sounds like ass, straight pipe it. No bigger than 2.5 for the pipe size

When you straight pipe it, just put glasspacked tips welded on the end of each pipe, it give it more of a throaty tone, I have this setup on my 97 ranger and it sounds awesome.....and its not obnoxious and doesnt sound like ass either :P lol

Here's my setup

2.25. Size, for exhaust, is critical. Too big and you will lose exhaust velocity and low end torque. Please, do not straight pipe it. Its cool at first, but gets old fast. Try a dual in/dual out muffler from Magnaflow, Dynamax, etc. They are crossed/open inside, so no crossover pipe is necessary.

dont you mean a single in dual out muffler? rangers arents true dual from the factory, he would have to run pipe from each manifold/header, get more o2 sensors, and run it around the gas tank, which is why single in dual out mufflers were made lol

If dual, go 2.5 from the cat to the Y, from the Y to the tips, go 2".

If single, go 2.25 all the way back.

straight pipe sounds like ass. but if you like something that sounds like ass, go ahead. But I vote on an OHV 4.0, go Flowmaster Delta Flow 40.

My advice is whatever you do, don't straight pipe ur ranger, I used to run my ranger straightpiped and it got old fast. Plus I noticed a decrease in torque and power, and on top of that, i lost at least 4 mpg on the highway, not to mention how annoyingly loud and obnoxius it sounded while daily driving. If you want the absolute best sound and performance, put on 2.5 inch diameter pipe behind the catalytic converter and run that into a (Single 2.5 inch Inlet / Dual 2.25 inch Outlet) Flowmaster Super 40 or Super 44 series Muffler, and then run 2.25 inch diameter pipes out of the muffler straight to the back. If you want to, just for looks, toss on sum 3 inch diameter tips. This is the absolute best exhaust set-up if you want the absolute best performance, along with a deep and throaty sound.

Also check out the Flowmaster 40 series Delta Flow Mufflers. In my opinion, those are the best sounding mufflers you can put on a ranger, or any other vehicle with a V6 engine. They aren't quite as loud as the Original 40 series or the Super 40 series, but in my opinion, the 40 series Delta Flow muffler sound the best. The muffler is built with Flowmaster's renowned Delta Flow Technology, which produces a deep throaty mean sound outside of the truck, but at the same time, there is little resonation in the cab. I love these mufflers because in my opinion, they sound the best, and because they aren't as annoying when your going down the highway. If you want the loudest sound possible, get the Original 40 series, but if you want an awsome exterior sound, without the annoying in cab drone, then the 40 series Delta Flow mufflers are for you.

I was thinking of my 07 Ranger's 4.0 when I wrote that. Mine has factory dual cats on each manifold with a Y pipe back to the muffler (used to). I put in a dual in/dual out Magnaflow, 2.25 pipes from the cats to the bumper.
