I've been thinking about putting a muffler on my 3.0, I've heard that if I put 2.5" muffler on the truck, it will kill my low end torque. Should I go to 2.25?
Or is this a myth?
I'm thinking about putting a Thrush Welded Muffler on the Ranger.

The torque bit is a myth.

Watch out for droning though, when I went to 2.5" on my truck I got a nasty resonance. Throwing a 2" ID baffle in the tail pipe has helped though.

Mine got a bit drony with 2.5" and a Flowmaster 40. I didn't notice any difference in torque, but the 4.10's may have prevented it from really being noticeable.

I was thinking about doing the 2.25" or the 2.5" and then continue that size with a new tail pipe. What is the stock pipe size? And would either size affect gas mileage?

I noticed on mine it was 2.5" into the cats, about 2.5" between the cats, then 2.5" out of the cats, then where the clamp was, it just dropped to 2." I wen't 2.5" cat back, but I just have a single outlet routed similar to stock so it exits on the passenger side rear.

I went 2.5 cat to muffler and 2.25 muffler out. I think that's a great setup I had a duels out the muffler

I think if you go to big you get an echo (drone). But I've also heard a 3.0 Nissan with a 4 inch maganaflow that sounded completely boss without any drone.

I straight piped my truck and didn't like it. Put a turn down in it and I like it now. I'm pretty sure that you can get rid of the droning.

In the next month I'm putting an Aero turbine 2525 (2.5 in/out) on my 4.0 with stock piping from the engine. If you wait ill let you know how bad my droning is and what I do to fix it. Idk if the droning will be more or less with 4.0 vs 3.0 as there is more exhaust gas begin pushed through.

If it were me id just get a 2.5 for my 3.0 if I had one.

Just for thought, the average 350/5.7L only needs a 2.5" exhaust.
So a 3.0L should be just fine with a 2" pipe maybe 2.25" at most.

This is my plan, I'm going to do the stock size from the cat back to the muffler, and then a 2.5" tail pipe.

I have a 3.0 v6 w/ a Magna Flow Exel 1 in 2 out muffler with 2.5 out the back. A little drone but it sounds great. I never turn the radio on any more. Many ask if I have a V8.
