I had a wheel cylinder blow out on me the other day and I need to buy a new one. How do I know what size I need? is it 10" or 9"? I dont have the old one off yet Cause I havent had the time. I just plugged the line for now. I have an 89 ext cab 2wd with a 2.9 if that helps.

IIRC, only axles with limited slips had the 10" brakes. You could always measure....

nope. most trucks got 10" brakes regardless of diff. type. usually only 4cyl. 2wd trucks got 9" brakes, but ford was really good at mixing and matching. the only way to be sure is to measure. the easiest way to do this with the wheels still on the truck is to measure the width of the drums. 10" drums are 2.5" wide, while 9" drums are only 1.75" wide.

Aren't the wheel cylinders the same on both 9 and 10" vehicles? I'm assuming that the OP is referring to the rear brake cylinder...unless you're replacing the shoes at the same time (good idea if they haven't been done for a while) then size doesn't matter...

napa shows 3 different wheel cylinders for an 89 ranger. looks like the 9" brakes used all 3 cylinders and the 10" brakes only used one of the options.

And that would mean they are the same...I thought about this because when I bought mine about two years ago I recall them asking me what size shoes I had and I didn't know at the time (the original had 9") and he cross-referenced them and the same part number came up...

no, that means if he has 9" brakes, he has 3 different options (regardling line size and mounting style it appears). if he has 10" brakes theres only one option.

Hmmm...OK...just appeared that if 3 options available...and only one of those three fits a 10" system...then the 9" system would use one the same as the 10" system...

Sorry...I'm stoked on bug spray...mind isn't working at 100%
