What should i do?

If he would get an older engine, it would have a pump similar to the picture I posted that would mount to the engine block and be operated by a lobe on the crank shaft or something like that. Wow! What an idea.

Not if he puts in a wind powered fuel pump ;) Then the only issue is always parking where you have a headwind, or pushing it fast enough to start ;)

Just give her a couple spins before you jump in... and hope for green lights and/or headwinds.

Atleast they failed alot less. And if they did changing one took 20 minutes....roadside...in the dark...to change.

interestingly enough... electric cars were a thing before internal combustion cars... I am surprised that Rusty isn't all over those :)

See that and raise you a 2.8 fuel pump. Last time I did that I remember it being a real fun time. I do have a lot more tools now than I did then though. My repair jobs seem to get exponentially easier as my tool collection grows larger.

I sold a beater Ranger to a teenager who knew it needed a fuel pump. We had the bed off and pump replaced in about 30 minutes, took him longer to run to the parts store than it did to do the repairs.

Personally I would probably not replace the pump. I save pumps from junker trucks and use them as needed, been doing it for years and it has yet to bite me in the ass.

My 2.8 pump was a major PITA.

It was week two of ownership, I was 16 and it was the first thing I did to the truck. Trying to figure out why it got such bad mileage... an issue that remained unfixed for the next 18 years...

I am pretty sure that the 302 that you put in to replace it didn't help the mileage issue any :D

302 with a 3spd was a slight improvement over a 2.8 with the four speed, it got me solidly into double digits. Putting a 5 speed on the 302 took it from 12mpg empty hwy to 18mpg running heavy with a big topper driving cross country

I was averaging 14 when I had to daily drive my 302 swapped Ranger. I think that's pretty damn good for a brick on 35's with a 4 speed. That was, of course, a huge decrease from the 20+ I got with the 2.9 and 5 speed when it was stock.

I think a properly tuned 2.8 with the right gears, a 5 speed and smallish tires could put up some nice numbers.

Mine wasn't in great shape when I got it, throw in a few first car "oops" on taking care of it and never really got any better.

My experience with with dual tanks on my 90 F150 was that soon after the tanks started to leak my Pumps went. I lost both pumps within a year of each other and tanks within a year and a half of each other. So long story short is if I need to do it over again I'll be replacing tanks and pumps at the same time. My F150 had 120K-ish when they went, on a side note I also had to do rear spring hangers and leaf springs in that time frame also.

Take it for what it is worth, one persons experience with this.

What pump brand did you use?

I wish I could remember, this was back in '03, I know I got them from Advanced at the time. I traveled up and down the east coast with those pumps and never had an issue. sorry I can't be more help than that.

I replaced both tanks on my F-150 back like 10-12 years ago. Re-used my pumps because I didn’t have money to spare for new. Front tank is fine, but the rear tank when it gets down below a half tank it has a tendency to act up. It will start sputtering like it’s empty, which it shouldn’t be because I bought a 19.5/20 gal tank and with it sputtering it will take no more than 10-15 gallons depending on how far it let me go. So I think the rear pump is dying. It seems to go longer in cold weather and sometimes it will let me run it ag after it started sputtering if I wait awhile.

That all said, I put a new pump in Mom’s 2002 Explorer when it died. Replacement pump made it a week or two before it was doing the same thing as the original pump. Another replacement and it’s been good since. Want to say they were both Delphi, but don’t hold me to it.

Put a new pump in my green Ranger and it’s been fine. Think it was some off brand on EBay or Amazon or something.

All good info guys. I apperciate it. Still not sure what to do though. Maybe keep the motorcraft in the front tank and replace the one in the rear as my front is usually my primary tank.
