What should I do?

I currently have a whining stock rear limited slip 8.8.
I am going to replace the rear axle assembly no matter what mainly because I want 31 spline axles.

I don't have access to a welder so if I got an exploder rear I would have to take it to a shop to get welded. That isn't a big deal $100 bucks to get it welded.

Thing I wanna know is what about the speed sensor that is located on the rear in my truck and how do I convert from drums to discs? Is it as simple as plugging in the brake lines to the disc calipers?

Or should I just get a ranger 28 spline axle replacement and just be done with it?

Well turns out I was lucky enough to find a 2006 Fx4 axle, so I guess this question is done.

But I would still like to know if the disc are plug and play with the existing drum brake setup.

Thanks

The Explorer axle's factory brake hose should connect to your hardline at the framerail no problem (it did on my BII anyway). You might need to lower it down a bit though, not sure.

Speed sensor is also the same.

Where you'll need to modify things a bit is with the parking brake cables. The cables on the Ex disc setup are shorter. You'll need to modify the bracket where it's attached to your leafspring hanger (or fab up a new one) and then extend the linkage forward so you can attach it to your main pedal cable.

A 28 spline Ranger axle is a direct bolt-in however (and the failure you're describing I don't see being helped by having a 31 spline axle).

Certainly can't hurt :icon_thumby: (especially if you plan to run much bigger tires, or will be hauling stuff a lot).

If that '06 FX4 axle isn't a "Level II" axle with the Torsen diff, it's just another 28 spline 8.8, so you might check that if you haven't already.
