just sold my CRX daily driver and decided I want a ranger it is a daily driver so it needs to be good on gas I'd also like for it to be 4X4 and a 5 speed. In the future I'll probably put a lift kit on it and maybe a turbo. What year and engine would probably be best?

4X4 + lift kit + bigger tires = poor fuel mileage. Especially compared to your old crx! You don't buy a 4x4 Ranger for the fuel economy. You're going to have to make sacrifices somewhere.
If you want boost or mileage, your best bet would be a 2.5L 4cyl, 5 speed truck. They're plentiful, relativley cheap, and easy to turbo. Mileage drops really quickly though when you add 4wd and bigger tires.
If you want the 4x4 and lift/bigger tires, I'd go with the 4.0 v6. It will handle the rigors of off roading much better than a 4 banger out of the box, but won't get the same fuel mileage, and will be tougher and more expensive to boost.

get a 94 or 95 4wd 5 spd 4x4 with a 4cyl

Dont get a 3.0 they suck on mileage I'm not even sure why they bother making that engine.

I got almost 18mpg on my lifted turbo ranger on 35" tires going over a mountain pass on one of my last tanks of fuel... it got 19mpg on the same type of driving N/A stock 4x4 with 31" tires...

least effort with the best parts is a '90-94 2.3L truck, that way you'll have the good tranny, good front axle and transfer case, and the turbo 2.3 from a thunderbird or other will be the easiest to wire in.

if u want a turbocharged ranger, id go with a 2.3L just because of how easy they are to turbocharge, but once u guy boost/tires/lift/4x4, you are sacrificing fuel mileage, your CRX should have been getting 35+ mpg, if u wanted fuel mileage, that car was the way to go

And a daily driver while you drop motor in so crx woulda been good to keep for that. This is my daily driver so it's hard to do big projects.
