What parts does PATS consist of?

My credo
If it ain't broke, I can't fix it.
Obviously the PATS system consists of the key, the chip sensor (key reader) and PCM.

1) If I wanted to use a different PCM without re-flashing it, I would need only the correct keys for that PCM, correct?

2) I wouldn't need to replace the chip sensor, would I?

3) Are there any other parts in the PATS system that I'm missing?

Thanks.

I assume that you're talking about a 2000 V6 Ranger. It uses the Type B PATS found in all 99~2000 V6 Rangers and all 98~2001 Explorer 5.0's. There are several other PATS systems in other years/models that are not compatible with a 2000 Ranger PATS.

The Type B system uses a PATS tranceiver in the column to read the RFID transponder keys. The PATS Module under the dash communicates with the tranceiver and the PCM. If you use the keys, PATS Module and PCM from the same donor, there should not need to be any reprograming. If you change any of those items, you break up the set and you'll need professional help to introduce the PATS Module to the PCM and/or program the system to recognize the keys being used.

Thanks for the info. I was afraid there might be a module hiding somewhere, so I'll do some heavy looking at the dash. I pulled it the other day with the harness, but didn't give it a hard look yet.

The PATS module in the 98~01 Explorer is a small box on a metal bracket bolted inside the dash above the passenger side airbag. I believe that the 99~00 Ranger module is in the same place.

If it's a six cylinder it will have PATS, but 4 cylinders for that year do not have it.

Thanks rwenzing.
