My truck just over heated and my fuel pump won't turn on. I noticed this part is making a small clicking sound and there seems to be disconnected hose right in front of it. Any idea what part it is? It's on the passenger side. Any way this is related to the fuel pump not turning on when the engine is hot? Thanks for helping a beginner.

Blower motor fan. I think it might be an aftermarket unit with no provision for that hose to be connected.

Definitely the blower motor...the hose helps to keep the fan motor cool so if you can't connect that hose then someone has swapped in an aftermarket like AndyB mentioned.

The fuel pump may be off due to inertia switch being tripped, but could be other things. If the truck engine is still hot there may be some other safety override that will not allow fuel to be pumped in accidents...not sure of an overheat safety...

The inertia switch is up under the dash on passenger side in most Rangers...may be behind the kick panel or up near the center of the firewall by the hump...small black switch with a red button usually...push that in to turn on pumps...if not tripped then it's something else.

EDIT: Come to think of it, the inertia switch may be making a ticking noise (not sure) and it may be located on the other side of the firewall behind the blower motor...they are pretty close to that location...blower motor doesn't usually tick...the resistor is solid with no moving parts that I recall...crawl in under the dash on the passenger side and listen in there...although it may have stopped by now or needs the key in the on position.

A faulty inertia switch might tick if it is trying to trip the switch...I had one completely melt on me once...but it was in the trunk on my Tempo so I couldn't hear or smell anything...

There are three relays in that area too. They would be out of the picture on the bottom left. The green relay is for fuel. The black and brown I'm not sure, one is for the computer, and if the computer or computer relay is screwed it affects the fuel relay. They click when turning on or off.

Oh, geez, it's an 87....so Richard is pointing you in the right direction...I keep thinking in terms of my 96 where the relays are all on the driver side...

Well stop thinking Mark and try reading for a change. Jeez!

I thought you were Canadian.

If the ticking coming from the blower motor and changes speed with the fan setting you may have leaves (like from trees) in the housing. Mine has done that before. The fan blades hit the leaves like a card in bike spokes.

Best to clean it out (and remove the two silver covers along the top of the firewall and clean them out of there too)

Heck even if it doesn't it isn't a bad idea to check, I know several trucks on here have burned down (or almost burned down) from leaves catching on fire in the heater.

Theres that thinking thing again.

:icon_rofl:

Well when I think of Mark I see a rusty red 1st gen being driven by a Canadian flag.

Geez, you guys are up early~!

I do keep forgetting to put a decent picture (one with my clothes on) of my truck with it's dazzling colour array...blue/brown/grey/red/black and whatever I had left over to cover some rust spots...so I'm happy to announce that I do not have any visible rust showing at this point...unless you look closely...

I'm not going to blame the meds...maybe the dog, but not the meds...

I was going to make mention of the meds, but then I didn't.

I was going to make mention of the meds, but then I didn't.

Normally I would take the path of least resistance and blame the meds, but I've worked my way down from 2400 mg/day to 1500 mg/day over the last month or so...so I'm at a level where I can function and focus for more than a few minutes without slipping off into another level of consciousness...

I've even been able to go outside and clean up a bit of the mess that I left last summer...although I'm surprised by how much mess I left...and how dismayed I was when I found that most of my good tools and some truck body parts were left to fend for themselves against a wet and cold winter...

Looking for ways to clean them without further damage...:annoyed:

A vinegar bath will remove rust without damage.
