What Oil to use?

Got a 04' 3.0. Just hit 75K. Should I switch to a 10-w30 at this point. I do use the lucas additive also. Any recommendations guys? Also, is there any danger to switching to a synthetic or semi after using non synthetic for the life of the truck? Sorry for the post again on oil but the last one didnt answer any of these questions. :icon_cheers:

Absolutely no reason to switch to 10w-30. Lucas additive is not necessary and I don't recommend it. It's never too late to switch to synthetic. Use any 5w-20, conventional, synthetic, or syn blend you want, without any addtives, and the engine will live a long, happy life.
 
Thanks for the recommendation. I think I will go ahead and switch to a semi. Thought I heard something about the conventional oil causing sludge that the syn will break up and clog the engine if you switch too late. Dont know. anyway, thanks.
 
No, and yes. Using a full synthetic at any mileage is better than dino blood, and yes, it will clean your engine better than regular coffee, but no where near the point of clogging anything.
Just make darned sure you use a premium filter.
 
If the engine has always been well maintained with regular oil changes, there shouldn't much, if any, sludge to begin with. Even if the engine did have a lot of sludge, synthetic is not powerful enough to break up large chunks of it anyway. It might slowly dissolve and clean up sludge, but by doing it slowly, there will only be very small chunks that won't clog anything and will just get caught in the filter. If you notice the oil getting darker faster than usual, that's the dirt and crap it cleaned off the inside of the engine
 
seafoam your truck before you change the oil. it breaks up any sludge or carbon and burns it off. i got 62k on my ranger did this just before it hit 60k and it makes a difference.
 
My 88 and 97 both ran and run 15-40 Halvoline....... it's what I run in everything (except the 2004, it gets the 10-30 halvoline)
I just run a heavier oil in my vehicles because sometimes they sit for a long time without me getting around to them.
I don't think 75k miles is call to start changing things up... do you have low compression or something? it should still run like a top.
