ok people i come on here for my ranger information and 2 weeks ago the ranger broke down on me.... at first I thought this was jsut a harmonic balancer failure, then I see the timing chain had popped, after further inspection and removal of the front timing cover, I see the part of the block where the Mains bolt to in the oil pan.... motor is toast, atleast the bottom end, the whole Crank is shifted about an inch forward...

whats the verdict or opinions on this matter, I love the ranger, and I dont mind having it sit for a few months while I find something to stuff in it, I mean it already had the 5.0 so no other mods need to be done, other than a block but maybe also just a 5 speed. The cab has rust but i mean that can eventually be replaced the frame is clean and the bed is decent.

Heres the most recent picture I have of the Ranger(about 2 months ago), I"ll try and get pics up of the carnage when I get a chance to upload the pics off my camera.

Thanks for the opinion, oh BTW in the pic you will notice the TRS sticker on the windshield(which needs replacement due to a small chip)

definately go with a new motor, either a good junkyard one, or if u got the cash a enw jasper(or u could just redo the junkyard motor)

No brainer. If you like the truck, and she's a beauty, new motor.

Got to jump on the band wagon also, new motor. The hard part is done, I'd even go with a good new short block, depending on pocket book. New short block is often cheaper than a JY motor and then the rebuild with an unknow quality of yard motor.
Yes, nice looking truck!

Def. a new motor.

If you got the cash, splurge for a Ford Racing crate motor. Already comes with gt-40 aluminum heads for 5 grand(PN M-6007-XEFMS ). I should've got this instead of dumping cash into the one I got.

Plus, you get a warranty with it.

Nope, nope, nope. That truck is beyond saving.

I'm a generous guy so I'll help you out and give you $500 to get it out of your way. :icon_twisted:

Kidding of course.

Sharp truck and definitely new motor.

But if you thought I was serious and was considering letting me have it for $500...

Then I'm serious! :icon_thumby:

I mean this picture is shot at the right angle, with the HID's on, otherwise it has yellowed headlights the truck still needs paint and the cab is rusty like I said around the firewall, it needs alot of stupid little stuff but it still needs some of big stuff too (paint, rust, motor/trans)we'll see how things go within the next few months.

no crate motor its gonna be 2nd hand local or JY motor for sure but i'm going to give it some time too so I can save a extra cash for those "lets do this while its out" mods.

Is it a GT?

If so don't even think about it, there is nothing more to discuss... you need to find an engine.:icon_thumby:

So did you break the crank or how is it an inch forward of where it is supposed to be?

Get a new shortblock. Get one that is roller cammed. Or you could always go with a 351W. It may cost a little more, but the extra cubes and torque will give you a bigger smile. It sounds to me like you've had a classic 5.0 failure. You may want to consider a main girdle in your build as well. What were you doing when it failed?

IMO...if its a DD, just stick to a basic 302 based replacement engine with nothing crazy...maybe good heads and roller if possible.

If it's truely a toy and you can be patient saving funds...then a stroked 302 of the 331 or 347 flavor would be awesome. Or if you want a monster...go the 351W route and end up with a torque hog that could be as big as 420+ inches.

It WAS my DD until this happened. so now i have one of my projects running daily as my brother is using my other main car. i'm gonna be on the market for a beater daily so I dont have to stress issues like this soo much and just do what needs to be done. I was planning a JY turbo project so maybe thats the future for my ranger., the ranger is basically my side car for hauling stuff and hauling A$$ for those who dont beleive it has a 5.0 :3gears:

I have a bellhousing / flywheel for a T5 and the pedals for the swap so Im planning something 5 speed for sure, then i'm gonna research more on 351s and if they would bolt up to a T5 or what not more than likely sticking with another 302 a little more mods/power than the one I had in there. My 88 supra just gave me the boost bug so i'll be researching like crazy to see if I can fit turbo parts list into the mix. should be fun, more BST(blood, sweat, & tears) to come depending on how the cashflow comes in and how the other projects come along within the next few months. :icon_welder:

I am also planning a new project by next month & probably on the 2nd week of August. I am just saving to buy all the parts I needed. For the mean time I'll just enjoy reading all of your progress here :icon_cheers:
