What motors will interchange with '04 VIN "K"?

Help an old Chevy guy out? I just picked up an '04 Sport Trac XLT (2WD) dirt cheap. The seller overheated it and I haven't torn it down yet to assess the damage. Just want to find out some basic info on what years/parts I can use on that motor.

Thanks in advance,
Richard

Well you might not have to... But I believe you have to keep the ECU with the engine so swapping an engine you'd have to swap the ECU. But that might just be when swapping in different engines.

Thanks for the replies but the ECM doesn't know which motor it's on as long as the motor is the same as the one it was on originally. In a swap, you'd be correct, but swapping identical 4.0's shouldn't require an ECM swap.

I asked this because my preliminary research indicates that there have been multiple changes/upgrades to the 4.0 SOHC over the years.

You shouldn't have to do anything with the computer. I THINK pretty much any 4.0 SOHC would work, but I'm not positive. Things like intake manifolds might be different on certain years, but you can swap those parts from your existing engine.

The 4.0 SOHC came in 1997-2011 Explorers, 2001-2011 Rangers, 2001-2009 Mazda B4000s, and all Explorer Sport-Tracs.

The early ones had problems with the timing chain tensioners breaking. Replacing them requires special tools and can be pretty involved. And, if the engine is installed in the vehicle, you have to remove the engine to replace the rear tensioner.

I would look for a 2004+ engine (those have the upgraded tensioners) or, if you get an earlier engine, install new, upgraded tensioners before installing the engine.
