What makes a 302 a 351?

Im just gathering info on engines before I go to make the swap. My plans were a 302 because someone gave me heads, , upper and lower intake, pushrods, pretty much everything but the block. I was thinking of throwing in a mild cam with bigger injectors and ported heads and intake. I read somewhere that 351W heads will fit the 302. If this is correct, what makes the 351w? Longer strokes? bore the 302 .60 over?

It all depends on which 351 you are referring too. There was a small block 351 (different block than a 302) and a big block 351 (the Modified and 400 was the big block).

Actually there were 4 different "351's" in stock form. First was the old FE series 352, then came the 351W, then the 351C, then the 351M, which was actually a destroked 400. ALl had the same bore & stroke (4.00 x 3.50) You can also make a 352 by using a 3.4" crank and boring the 302 block .060. Then there's the aftemarket 5.0 blocks that allow a 4.125 bore, combine that with a 3.25" crank and you have yet another 352.

The 351W is the one that can use the same heads as a 302. The 302 has a 8.2 inch deck height and the 351W has a 9.5 inch deck height. So the 351W has a longer stroke than the 302.
