what kind of fluid do i use

its a 94 ford ranger 4.0 liter manual trans believe its the m5r1 and idk if i should use gear oil or atf......i see alot of people saying to use either or...any suggestions? if atf what kind or does it matter..

I personally have never heard of using gear oil in a transmission,
But I could be wrong, I have always used any synthetic ATF

Well my dad has always used 80-90w gear oil.....we haven't had any problems but I would like to have the correct fluid in it

almost all modern manual transmissions use ATF. gear lube is thicker and designed for lots of clearance between gears and bearings. when used in a modern trans, it cant get into the bearings as well, and puts more load on the bearings, as if you put a rag between the gears. most manual trans failures are bearings, and most of those are caused by using the wrong lubricant. hope this helps

I drained the atf and went with mtf (manual transmission fluid) with a gl4 rating. It's got about the same consistency as atf just a little slicker trans shifts much smoother. Just my 2 cents

Stick with ATF. Or 0W-30...

recommended lube is ATF, Mercon. Mine shifts better when full.
