I have a 2001 Ford-Ranger with an auto-tranny and 4.0 V-6. A little while ago,I had my cruise-control "Stock" sensors,go out on my truck. To repair this,I bought a COMPLETE cruise-control sensor-set that comes with the wiring-harness already installed into the sensors on both sides of the steering-wheel.

My only job,was to unscrew the OLD sensors and wiring-harness,remove those, and screw on my NEW sensors/wiring-harness. I installed everything exactly the way I removed my old sensors,wiring-harness,and plugged the new wiring-harness into the steering-wheel electrical-outlet,hooked-up the new wire-plugs on the left/right side and screwed in the ground-wire to the left sensor just like it was on the original.

I finished and put the air-bag back on,bolted everything back up,and started the truck. When I did so,I pushed the "ON" switch on my NEW sensor and my green cruise-control light is SUPPOSED to light up "Cruise" on my dash!!! It DID NOT do so,showing that it wasn't receiving anything from my BRAND-NEW sensors on the steering-wheel!!!

My QUESTION IS: WHAT is WRONG with it??? I hooked up everything exactly like it SHOULD BE,but I'm NOT getting a dash-light stating my cruise-control is on when I press the "ON" button!?!? I took it for a test-drive,and nothing works on it!!! When I turn ON my lights, the lights of the sensors work, but that's it!!! WHAT is causing my BRAND-NEW SENSORS to NOT WORK??? ANY and ALL answers will be EXTREMELY HELPFUL!!! Thanks everyone!!!

Misdiagnosed. Replace that blown cruise control fuse lol

Hitting the "on" button alone will not turn on the light, not activate the cruise.
You'll need to actually set a speed, activating the system.

First... The things on the steering wheel are switches, not sensors.

Second... You could have a blown fuse, bad clock spring, bad CC module, damaged wiring, amongst other things.

Cruise control will not work or even turn on under 25mph.

I can push buttons all day under 25mph in my Sploder, nothing happens. No lights or anything. Get it over 25mph (actually around 27 on the speedo), lights come on and CC is completely functional.

+25mph
Press on
Press set
Then light comes on.

If not,
Check fuses
Don't drive with both feet
Check that 05S28 recall was done
-if so check that the switch isn't leaking and/or the fuse in the harness blown
Confirm proper smooth speedo function
Check clock spring

Confirm those things and then tell us what you find.

Third.....Did you disconnect the battery prior to the repair ??

First, thanks to EVERYONE on here, who replied!!! NOW......I already checked the fuse on the cruise FIRST-THING!!! The fuse is fine,so that's not the issue. Secondly,I took it for a "test" drive after I installed my new "Switches" (thank-you snoranger,Lol.) on the steering-wheel and got it up to about 55/60 mph. BEFORE hitting the "On" button on the steering-wheel,and NOTHING lit-up on my dash (no green "Cruise" light like it's s'posed to) and then I preceded to hit the "Set" button on the steering-wheel and I let off the gas and.....absolutely NOTHING HAPPENED!!! Sorry folks, but I already followed everyone's suggestion on here, with NO LUCK!!! My last "hope" here,is I ordered a brand-NEW Cruise-control brake-release switch from Rockauto,HOPING that's what's causing all this to NOT WORK!!! When I get it and install that,I'll let everyone on here, know if that was the problem or not!?!? STAY-TUNED.............

No,I did NOT first disconnect the battery before I installed my new "switches"!!! I already KNOW that was NOT the "proper" thing to do,as not doing so,could've EASILY mistakenly activated the air-bag!!! Fortunately,it did not do so (thank-goodness) but I'll definitely remember to DISconnect the negative-terminal from the battery if I EVER have to open up that part of the steering-wheel that contains the air-bag EVER again!!!

Just trying to offer what I can.....Check your 3rd brake light. Does it work? If it's burnt out, replace the bulb and try the cruise again. Many vehicles use the signal from the 3rd brake light as a cancelling mechanism. This is very common on GM vehicles. Not sure about Rangers, but it's all I have to offer you. Good Luck.

Thank-You Hammermechanic, but I've read other posts, and alot of em say,to simply replace the cruise-control's "brake-release" mechanism, which unlike GM vehicles,is not situated on the 3rd brake-light. On Ford-Rangers,there situated right on the brake-reservoir underneath the hood. Thanks for your input though!

That guy on the master cylinder is actually a back-up deactivator. The primary is the signal out of the brake on/off switch. The switch on the master can kill the cruise if it goes bad or is unplugged.

Thanks to everyone who replied to this thread!!!

I just wanted to give a quick shout-out to everyone on here, that helped me narrow down the problem with my NON-WORKING cruise-control!!! I MEANT to post what happened after I got it back working, but things come up,and I simply forgot. So HERE I am again........and AFTER buying NEW Cruise-control buttons for the steering-wheel.......I realized that the "Bad" part, was the "Brake-deactivation" switch located on the master-cylinder!!! Turns out, that is all I needed to get my cruise-control to work again!!! It was a pretty "inexpensive" part (compared to what I paid for the cruise-control buttons for the steering-wheel) But the GOOD NEWS is,I'm glad I bought those new buttons on the steering wheel too,cuz the "original" ones were HARD to press, compared to the new ones which only needs a slight "tap" to get them to work!!! Anyway,I bought everything online at Rockauto.com and they were very reasonably priced and delivered to me quickly,so NO complaints!!!

I NOW have a WORKING cruise-control system again!!! YAY!!! (again,my apologies for taking THIS LONG to let You all know it's now FIXED!!!) Thanks for the help!!!
