What is this noise?

I have an '87 Ranger 2.9 ext cab 4x4. It makes a whirring noise when the truck is idling in neutral with the clutch pedal out. I thought it sounded like the release bearing. I dropped the tranny, replaced a perfectly good clutch, pressure plate, and that little bearing that goes inside the flywheel. The release bearing face seemed worn like it was rubbing on the pressure plate fingers but it wasn't tore up and still spun freely. I put everything back together, fired it up and the noise is still there. Truck runs fine, stalls out if I don't gas on it when I take off but I think that might be a different issue.

I enjoyed working on the truck with my son and we learned some stuff about dropping the trans for the future. Other than that and now having a spare clutch and pressure plate the noise is still there.

If you know what it might be I'd appreciate the help. Thanks, Ken.

thats your input shaft on your transmission. its spinning freely in your transmission when its not in gear. might be the bearing or something. I have access to cheap transmissions, so for me, I would drive it till it blows and swap a new one in there. you might want to get another one lined up, just in case, or have this one out to be rebuilt.
