What is this noise caused by?

the idler or the tensioner pully could be bad if not that the tensioner assembly could be bent and not doin its job correctly

try starting it with out the a/c on. It is diff belt slip. if u have a friend around take a big screw driver and pull one end on the idler pulley and put your ear on the other end and have them start the truck, if that does not give u anything move to the belt trencher. if those sound good then a/c clutch is sticking at start up and the belt is slipping on the pulley

Not sure why they keep saying tightening it, but I would start it with out the belt and see if it still makes the noise. If not, then dowhat Tader said.

I'll try what Tader said.

I can't overtighten the belt... I have an automatic tensioner so I don't need to adjust the tension.

My truck makes that same kind of noise and it caused by a lazy starter. It doesn't disengage fast enough and the flywheel gets it, that may not be what your noise is but mine sounds a lot like that.

I was hoping to get this fixed before I go out of town for Thanksgiving but haven't had the chance to. If it is a lazy starter, do I need to get it fixed right away or do you think it will be okay to drive on from Nashville to Atlanta and back (about 4 hours each way)? I know it might be a tough call based on what little information I have about it.

Triumphrider has a good suggestion. Start it w/o the belt. While it's off, check the idler pulley, alternator, water pump, etc. for looseness or rough spinning. Would be coincidental if something like the starter started making noise just when you did the belt, but it can happen. Also, the 3.0s have a habit of the cam position sensor going bad. It's in the right rear, on top of the motor, where a distributor would sit. The CPS makes a chirping/grinding noise when it starts to go bad. When it fails, it can take out the engine, because it drives the oil pump. If the noise is coming from the rear of the engine, check it out. Easy to do, like pulling a distributor, but you need to be careful to keep it in synch. There are a lot of discussions on here about how to change it.
