What is this hose for?

Can anyone tell me what this hose is for? It comes from that device on the sidewall, and is collapsed in the middle. And, if I unhooked the egr, what should happen?
Trying to figure an idle issue. Will be checking fuel pressure this evening, have sprayed vac lines with carb cleaner, no change. Thanks

ON the 2.3 that would probably be the purge canister vacuum line. it goes to the purge solenoid and that should go to the canister near the rad...but I can't see the image as well to trace it with my eyes...

That is an evap line. It does go to the carbon canister, which is near the rear of the vehicle on your year, not near the firewall like the ones Mark is thinking of.

If you unhook the EGR at idle nothing should happen, because gas engines don't use EGR at idle. It kinda makes them stall.

It's a 2.5 I think...99

Yes, that would be correct. I keep mixing them up because I had a 1998 2.5 in my 96 Ranger (transplanted to replace the 2.3) that used the 96 emission and everything else...so where everything is on the 99 I can only concur with Adsm08 and his wider knowledge of these things...

Are you getting an error code for that or just trying to figure out what is what?

I had codes for idle speed, bank 1 lean, and o2 sensor not switching. The truck had about 3/4 of a tank of bad gas when I bought it; didn't get used much, PO had put seafoam in the gas at some point. All my vac lines were hooked together with some plastic T's. Got those back, but idle was rough, trying to figure out why. Sprayed vac hoses/intake with carb cleaner to check for leaks, none found (so far). I drained the fuel tank, replaced the filter, and now in the middle of tank #2 of good gas + fuel cleaner. Last night a few times it felt like it lost power for a few seconds, but today ran fine. So, I'm looking for anything I may have to change. The MAF, IAC, and O2 were changed by the PO just before I bought it.
What do I replace this hose with?

You can still buy the soft rubber hoses if that's what you are looking to replace. The inside diameter is what you need to confirm and I think 1/4" hose or 3/16 would work.

If you cannot find the hose in stores you may need to hit a junkyard. Just inspect the hose for breaks and loose ends and cut it back a 1/2" if you have enough length. The smaller vacuum tubing can also be purchased or obtained from the junkyard. I'm still trying to track down a post by a new member about buying the vacuum tubing in bulk...can't find it but I remember seeing a link and visiting the page...

Sounds like you've researched possible causes of DTCs so you are probably ahead of what I can add. IAC is usual idle suspect but it could also be a leaky contact...and replaced parts are not necessarily working parts.

Did you try unplugging the IAC to see what the idle does? It should drop considerably if it is working.

Another possible issue is the age and replacement of the timing belt. If the engine is over 100,000 and the belt has never been changed it is possible the timing is slightly off causing the idle to be off and power would suffer also...but it would be across the power band so probably not the issue you are seeing.

This link has a few tips that might help you...at the bottom there is a link for surging idle...

Thanks. Going to pull a part Saturday for my wife's car, gonna look there. Oh, the truck has 26k miles :)

OK...happy hunting...

26k the belt should be OK...but it is also about 18 years old...unless someone has changed it over the years...if the engine otherwise runs fine it's not likely the belt...just another possible of many.

Vac leak would also explain lean bank 1...but you're on that already so let us know what you find...if you have time!

ok, so upon checking the fuel pressure yesterday, koeo is about 10, engine running is about 30-35, doesnt hold pressure at all with key off. Fuel pump replacement is next, but should I change the entire assymbly or just the pump? where do yall suggest I buy from?
Still have to change that hose; i noticed that with the engine running, it collapses in the middle and closes itself.

I bought a new fuel pump and the strainer thingy on the bottom of it from Rock Auto and I'm happy so far. Mine is a '93. It was easy to change. I also replaced the gasket around the opening where the whole assembly mounts to the tank.

I usually compare prices between Rock Auto and the local Advance, Oreilly's, NAPA. But I am accumulating a bunch of those Rock Auto magnets with the car pictures on them. :icon_twisted:

lol I have been collecting those too

Usually Rockauto beats the local box stores prices even after you figure in shipping. Not always, but most of the time.

Changed their fuel pump, cleared the codes, and so far (200 miles) no codes, truck is running great :)
Still need to change that hose !
