I have the inevible ticking from my 2.9.... i thought it was an exhaust leak, but my dad helped me rule that out....

i believe ive possibly narrowed the ticking down to a little black modulator that has a vaccumm on it

see circled picture.... what is it and what does it do and can it be the cause of ticking?

searched alittle on ebay for "ranger 2.9 fuel" because it has a fuel line hooked to it.

i guess its called the fuel pressure injection regulator.

That part doesn't tick. It works using vacuum to regulate the fuel pressure. When it fails? You'll see fuel in the vacuum hose.

If you hear ticking from that area? Most likely it's injector tick, as the injectors sit along that rail the FPR (Fuel Pressure Regulator) is attached to. The noise could be traveling a bit.

Have you ever used a poor mans stethescope. Take a long screwdriver and put your ear up to the handle and listen around. Be careful of moving parts it is kinna fun you can listen to alot of things. Bearings, rockers, injectors, solenoids the closer to the noise the louder it will sound. If you go along the valve covers you can hear the individual rockers. Just a pointer for future diagnostics.

ill try that stuff out...

its just annoying because my ticking is pretty loud, it seems to be coming from the center intake manifold area and when driving the truck it sounds so much like an exhaust leak from inside the cab

Agreed, I think it might be your injectors. If you already know its not a exhaust leak and it turns out not to be the injectors then... Its the dreaded lifter tick! The oil passages around the cam bearings loose pressure and do not feed enough oil and pressure to the hyd. lifters witch then start to collapse and that's when you start to hear the tick.

Cause you can bend an extension around to the bottom of an exhaust manifold or throttle body...

I wouldn't say "better". They all have their use.

i bought a cheap stethiscope from harborfreight... only 3$ i was there and figured why not...

also i bought a stewart warner electrical oil pressure gauge so i can check the oil pressure...

hopefull i can shed some light on my ticking...

i plan on doing full write ups on my truck when the time comes... the forums ive belonged to before. i did some really great threads and everyone loved them... so i hope to add that to the community here

update on my truck... i honestly havent used my stethoscope yet on the truck, but i did change my water pump as well as the upper and lower hoses.

and that made the engine sound a hell of alot better... after i got my water pump off i spun it in my hand and it sounded like when your brakes pads are wearing out and scratching on the rotors...

but anyways, with the water pump not making any noise... it seems like my ticking may be coming from the injectors...
