I have an 88 2.9 2wd 5 speed ranger and there is a vibration/rattle that is rpm related (happens at around 3,000 rpm) coming from somewhere under the truck either in the trans or in the bottom end of the motor. I know that this was a common problem with imports and I hope someone knows what it is and how to fix it. Thanks again for all the help and advice.

Well, start with a visual inspection of the underside. Is it only related to engine speed, or does ground speed affect it as well? If you are running along and get it vibrating and drop it in neutral, does it go away? Can you make it vibrate at a stand still by revving to 3K?

Might be the heat shield on your cat(s), though that usually rattles at idle...

if you can have someone rev your motor and get it to start making the noise and get under the truck and either get a stethescope and put it on the motor and tranny and see where its loudest to isolate where the rattle is coming from, you can also use a screwdriver, thats how I isolated my rattle...other then that about a million things can rattle kind of hard to say without checking around first.

I had that rattle ended up being pieces of the cat in the muffeler I thought it was the tranny also. Tap on the muffeler with the palm of your hand so you dont punch a hole in it in case that is not it.

it is not a heat shield or loose hanger, I didn't even think to check the muffler except for wiggle. It is loudest in the area of the bellhousing, like the pressure plate or flywheel. I had AAMCO rebuild the trans and put in a clutch less than 4,000 miles ago so I would not be surprised if they jacked it up, and go figure they do not warranty standard transmissions.
