Ok first off if this is still against the site rules or w/e mods please feel free to delete this and I will understand. Ok as some of you may know, I've been battling with my header project for some time now. However I am finally nearing the end:yahoo: BUT I am putting on a high flow cat and I am chopping apart my stock cat to have the plate to oval a pipe into (check out this thread: http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/showthread.php?t=65549) I can draw a pic if needed. But long story short I will not have my stock cat and I will not be able to get one for about a week. But I ABSOLUTELY NEED a vehicle to get to work. I also have a O2 sensor downstream of the cat. If I simply unplug that sensor and run open headers until I can get a high flow cat will it mess up my computer? I know if there was no upstream O2 sensors it would be a mess but what about downstream? P.S. Mods if this is still against the rules (Im getting a high flow asap. promise haha) you can delete this thread, I would run the stock one but its needed to supply the stupid 3 hole oval plate thing. Thanks

i think not running a down stream o2 sensor is gonna make your engine run like crap. cuase thats what senses if the cat is working or not. so without it, the computer cant monitor fully whats going on..

The downstream O2 has no effect on how the engine runs, it is 100% only there to monitor the performance of the converter. Your engine light will be on, but at least you will know why. I'd leave the sensor plugged in if you can just so that it will only set catalyst efficiency codes which should clear out quickly. The heater codes that would be generated by running with the sensor unplugged will take longer. The real concern is the lost back pressure from running open headers. If you don't have the back pressure to keep the fresh air off of the upstream O2 it won't run very well.

It will either throw a code saying the cat is not working properly because the lack of one being there to cataliz the carbons. (actually it will do that no matter what) And then it will most likely run like crap due to the engine trying to compensate for too much or too little fuel... even though its fine.

:icon_rofl: Dont read above it might catalyze your brain cells. Read adsm08's post as it is correct.

take the sensor and zip tie it to a crossmember and you wont throw a code... the second sensor only reads oxygen so it will be good.. but get a cat asap

I just realized I must be retarded. I will just hook my stock cat up until I buy a aftermarket high flow one and then hack apart the old one...I had it in my head that I couldn't reconnect the stock one. But now I realize I can...easily...haha. Thanks for the help even tho I didn't need it :icon_twisted: Hopefully someone else had the same question which is now answered...? lol...how embarrassing

Good thing you clarified what the oxygen sensor reads I was starting to think it sense's for vanilia pudding in the exhaust. :icon_rofl: Also bad advice to tell someone to zip tie a somewhat expensive part to the frame of the vehicle. Especially so close to winter, did you know road salt contamination will ruin it? Leave it in the exhaust pipe or unplug it, you can always clear a code but once that sensor goes bad from getting soaked in road spray or a random rock hitting it, it wont be a free fix. And yes a properly fuctioning sensor will cause the computer to throw a code being in open air as it is not getting the readings it is looking for.
