What id the orange/white dimmer wire for?

No, it is not necessary. I believe the purpose that wire serves is to dim the head unit when you turn on the park/head lamps. I didn't bother with mine, since I can manually dim my HU via the HU settings with the same effect.

THANKS! thats what i was thinking, but i think a lot of things.
Dims the HU with your dimmer switch.
I'd hook it up. Mine doesn't have one, wish it did.
