'02 4x4, 4.0l with about 178k. at about 100k, i replaced the tranny fluid and used gear oil. why? i can't remember. i seem to recall reading a thread here that it was OK, but who knows.

today i changed fluids in all gear boxes, diffs, tranny and t-case. gear oil in the diffs, atf in tranny and t-case.

i read through a few threads today and it seems gear oil in the tranny is a big no-no. after changing fluids, the tranny shifts a bit better. i don't think synchros are gone as i can still slip into 1st coasting to a stop at about 20 mph.

i've got to think in ~80k miles if something was going to happen, it would have. so, once you stop laughing at my dumba$$, what do you think?

Not much you can do about it now. Might drain it again in about 1K miles and put in more fresh ATF.

i agree, water under the bridge. just figured i would get some opinions. the change in a 1k or so is a good idea.

i don't think it honestly hurt it that much...lube is lube for the most part. but i would definintely flush it out a 1k and put some Mercon V in there.

I know most books just say Mercon, but Mercon V really does run cooler. I haul a lot of loads of hay, and camping equip in my truck and when i used Mercon, i could feel heat coming from the shifter, switched up to mercon V and no longer feel the heat...

it's not going to hurt anything, gear oil is just thicker and lacks detergents.

but, i don't really see why a manual transmission needs detergents in the first place, you'll be fine.

Previous owner on mine put gear lube in. Shifted like crap.

It took 3 changes to rid it of the golden splotches. Runs 5x better on Mercon III.

Don't say Mercon III around here, theres no such thing and i've been bitched at 2 times for it.....Its Dex III/Merc just to make all the technical people happy :thefinger:

Your transmission hasn't become hard to shift running Mercon V? (is it original or rebuilt?)

There IS "Mercon III"

I have a plastic MOTORCRAFT bottle of the stuff.

It is clearly labeled "MERCON III"

And why are you still hanging on to this bottle? Because it's a rare MISLABELED bottle? The last time we argued about this I asked you to name one application that specifically called for Mercon III. Not regular Mercon, not Mercon V, or SP or LV. I'm still waiting for a response.

nope. my transmission for some reason was always hard to shift. i think its just the way it is. Original as far as i know besides putting an O/D gear in.
