what exhaust sounds the best on a 4.0

I think all aftermarket offerings for any V6 sound great at idle. Rev them up that all sound like farm tractors. Infinity G35 excluded. Stay stock with the exhaust.
That is certainly a matter of opinion. I have never heard a high revving farm tractor but have heard many different ones and maybe a four cylinder Ranger with a loud exhaust comes close but not a V6.

I think the stock exhaust on a 4.0 SOHC engine sounds absolutely terrible at full throttle. It has this hiss/whoosh sound that should not come out of any vehicle.

The first thing I did to my Ranger when I bought it new was to upgrade to a Gibson SS single side swept cat back exhaust. It is relatively quite but I can still hear a true exhaust note throughout the rpm range. Many people would consider it too quite but it suits me just fine. I use to drive a 2.9L Ranger that would set off car alarms. I like the quieter Gibson better.

My Gibson has over 100,000 miles on it now and shows no signs of failing but is somewhat discolored. I expect it to still be working well when I hit the 300,000 mile mark.

gw33gp-Did you notice any mileage/acceleration gains with the gibson single swept exhaust? I've been shopping around for something to add a bit of tone to the truck without a lot of resonance in the cab.

No gas mileage improvement. Can't say for sure but the Gibson Side Swept seems to have a little better power through mid-range rpm. For sure it provides better acceleration at high rpm but nothing to get extremely excited about. I don't know if anyone would see much improvement on a 3.0 Ranger. I think the 4.0 SOHC engine stock exhaust system is restrictive for that engine. Putting on something that flows better is bound to improve power at the higher rpms when exhaust flow is at it highest.

Overall there are no drawbacks to the Gibson aside from the cost. No improvement in gas mileage and slight increase in power, plus you get to hear the engine a little with a good mild exhaust note.

i love the sound of shanes truck i wish i could hear it in real life

3 inch is too big of a pipe diameter for a v6. the max you should go to one any 4.0 is 2.5 inches, unless youve done some serious work on the motor.

with that big of pipe that gas cools down too fast, and looses velocity, which forces the engine to work to expell gas from the combustion chamber.

i have a magnaflow cat an magnaflow muffler on my 4.0 an it isnt street legal yet so i dont kno how it sounds while driving but when it runs in the driveway it sounds really aggressive an deep. i will only use magnaflow on my vehicles from now on, me an my brother have then on all our vehicles.

when i get my camera back i can get a sound clip if you would like?
