If it's not making any noise it's probably safe. There was discussion the other day at explorer forum about a way to swap to a manual chain tensioner that helps with the problem. Pre oiling the system before start seems to help too.

changing the tension critters periodically works pretty good.

they are sensitive to shitty oil.

i hate working on them because they area pia to do anything to. but a well maintained unit in texas with 250 k on it may have quite a bit of life in it.

I sold my '02 4.0 at 225,xxx back in 2014 and it ran perfect. Never made any noise and its still driving around out there. All original engine when I had it. I guess go check it out and listen carefully.

As stated before. Super picky about oil. Only run 5w30. And a motorcraft filter.

They like to eat o2 sensors.

Intake gaskets are a bitch to do. And they always blow out and cause a nasty lean condition.

They have a really nice torque curve. And with a 5 speed behind them. Are quite fun to drive.

Take it out, romp on it, run it up past 3K and then let off the gas and drop the clutch at the same time, let it drop to idle as quick as you can and listen for any signs of a rattle. If it is there, walk. If it is quiet, go for it.

Replacing the engine isn't really any harder than doing an OHV. I think they are easier to hook on to, but working on them can be a pain because it is a wide engine.

Chains aren't the most fun things to do, but with the right tools they are not terrible. 24 hours book time to do them, and I have never lost on those.
