What do you think caused this?

Are there any opinions on the aftermarket polymer fuel tank that Graveyard sells? I'm thinking that will be the next tank I put in when the current one inevitably begins to rust.
You ll probably end up selling the bronco B4 that thing rusts out . The dorman ones are a nice unit when there made correctly

No opinion on the plastic tank?

After a new metal gas tank I put into a 1992 Jeep Cherokee lasted all of four winters up here, I never ever expect anything more. The only reason I out a metal tank in this time is because it came with the truck. I am only curious if anyone has any opinions on the quality and longevity of a polymer tank, because as far as I know, I feel a good tank made of Basell or Exxon is going to be superior to any metal tank. But that's just me. I've seen how much of a beating these can take.

The plastic tanks rust too. My 99 Tahoe came originally with a plastic tank. It started leaking. Found out they molded the little lock tabs that hold the sending unit, into the plastic of the tank. This steel ring molded in the plastic around the sending unit hole rusted. The rust swelled the plastic up around the hole and deformed it where it would not seal. At the time I could not get a new plastic tank so I went with a metal one that was for a 2dr. That was a lot of work but I got it.

The best tanks are the ones from Spectra in Canada. They are who made the OEM tanks. They have that nice tin coating, they are not painted. But with all this trade war stuff, not sure you can get one, especially if inventory dries up.

Oh I'm aware of the steel locking rings, the truth is, a good one would come coated to help prevent rust (hardly helps when part of the coat scratches off when installing). But the rest of the plastic tank sure does not.

Funny enough, my truck came with a Spectra gas tank. Made in Canadia.

Did it come painted ? Or was it raw steel? Dorman tanks come painted

I thought about doing that to the tank I put on. But I was in a bit of a time crunch with a head gasket blowing on the Jeep, and faulty wiring on the Ranger (again)...

Fingers crossed im sick of dropping the thing

As a bonus i found out my gas gauge is way off...it said 1/4 tank i siphoned out 15gallons
From what I remember back in the day people complained about the small tanks in BII's (remember, this is 25 years ago, wasn't much info out on things then) as they were showing empty at like 10 gallons used but there were people that knew they were like 23 gallons...

Yep...exactly what mine does.

It looks like the float bottoms out about 1\4 tank before its empty

To be fair, if the float is going to be inaccurate one way it's better to be showing less than you actually have, rather than more. One should never fully trust them anyway.

But yeah ¼ tank is pretty crummy. I understand 1/16 or maybe I can be persuaded to understand ⅛. Speaking of, this is part of what I don't like about the new Bronco Sport (my mother bought one two years ago). It doesn't have a proper gauge, it's just 8 or so light bars. So if it gets to the last bar, you better be headed for the gas station because that "50 miles before empty" may not exactly be true.

I have that one in my Choptop currently. I’m not a fan of the hold-down for the sender, but it’s working.

My 95 F-150 had a “less than one year old” Spectra tank for the rear tank when I got it and the tank looked about that clean, maybe 2 years at the worst. I bumped a wrench against the seam when replacing the rear spring hangers after I got it and the tank instantly started leaking from the seam and it was bad. There really isn’t any room between the seam and the frame so it really wasn’t a hard bump either. I put a plastic tank in. Then I saw the front tank looked wet so it got a plastic tank too. Green Ranger, lil Blue, and my red 92 all had plastic from the factory. My 88 will get a plastic tank and an 89 pump upgrade when I get back to working on it.

Also, skid plates are your friend…
