My credo
i think i have some truck on my rust
Right now I’ve got the rough country levelling springs and 31x10.5 r15 tires on. I’m dubious of the tech library honestly, is it states I need a 3” body lift for 31s in the first place. I assume this is for rwds/ 83-88s, both being lower and all that in the case of what fits inside the fenders. I unfortunately am having a terrible time just sourcing 32s as it seems like most people just go up to 33s, so I’m asking if anyone with experience on this can help. Thanks!!

Sawzall.

31” tires *can* rub with no lift. Not always, but usually, depends a lot on what rims are used. A 2” suspension lift or a 2-3” body lift or a sawzall can fix that. 1-2” body lifts are rare, the most common body lift you find for sale is a 3”.

My Choptop I had a 3” suspension lift that I cobbled together with a 2” body lift and cleared 33” tires fine. Added another 2” to the suspension lift and stuffed 35” tires on.

My 88 is getting a 1” body lift and 2” suspension lift and 31” tires if I can ever get back to putting it back together.

The 4wd rangers in the 80s thru the 90s, even the ranger edge you could use 31s on stock height. The 2wd rangers needed a lift to run 31s. Even back then 32s were not really famous, not many were around. People used 31s and 33s mostly.

You're already using a level lift, I would put in a 1-1.5" to a 2" coil spacer in the front, and put in a taller lift block under the leaf springs..that way you're all suspension, no body lift. Do it that way and you will be able to fit 32s with no issues at all.

My experience with 32" tires on my 2002 FX4 is, the height is not so much of a problem as the width. The 32" tires I used were 11.5 " wide and I would get an occasional rub, sometimes even when not off-road. When I went to 10.5 x 33" tires had very slight rubbing rarely in extreme articulation off-road.

My 02 has just a 1.5" T-bar lift and stock 15'" FX4 wheels. I now a 91 is different but I think the 32" tire situation would still stand. My 02 FX4 came from the factory with 31" AT tires.

Hard no

83-88 has smaller wheel wells front and rear. With a 3" lift I still had to roll the rear of my front fenders in to clear the tires when turning.

89-92 has slightly bigger wheel openings. My FIL tried a 31 on his stock '91 and thought it would work but I am dubious how well it would clear when flexing.

93-97 had huge wheel well openings and can run 31's stock.

This is all in reference to 4wd

If you go to a 17" wheel (yeah I know...) you can find 32" Bronco takeoffs pretty easily, our Bronco came from the factory on 32's.

There is not much difference between 83-88 and 89-92 for tire clearance. The rear is identical - front might be a TINY bit better on 2nd gens but not by much. You are not going to run 31's with no lift and no rubbing. I have a 3" lift in the front of my '88 and 31's on stock wheels and they still rub on the radius arms. Wider/aftermarket wheels that have different offset may be much worse. I think you will need a 4" lift at minimum for 32's and your wheel choice will be a big factor.

This is 31's on stock wheels with the 3" lift - these same wheels & tires fit great on 93+ with no lift and no rubbing at all.

My FIL could drive around the block with his stock '91 on 31's, I was rubbing in my driveway with a 3" lift.

The '31's did fit my truck better with the D28, thinking more about it I didn't have to tweak the front fenders until after the D35 swap.

Yeah the D35 is quite a bit wider. My blue truck does have a D35 in it.

I had 30x9.50x15's on my other '88 and they were on 15x8 Mickey Thompson wheels. They rubbed on the rear edge of the fenders and on the inner wheel well liner. That truck had no lift and a D28. Wheel choice matters a lot.

Mine are pretty close to stock, my spare is on a AR Outlaw II style factory wheel (same wheel that is on the 91 lol) and the spacing is pretty much the same.

I ran 31" AT tires on my 89 STX for 200K miles with no serious issues. It had 1.5" lift in the front from the factory, and I had the stock STX aluminum wheels. If I turned full lock, I could get some very light rubbing in the front. I never got any rubbing with extreme articulation. One time I was flying up a sandy steep incline, the truck went air born when I hit a dip. When it hit the ground, the left rear tire hit the front inside of the left rear Ford fender flare I had installed. It just popped a rivet without any other damage and was an easy repair.

It must be the narrower D28, I ran 31's on my '90 ('89 frame) with a D28 with no real clearance issues but that extra width of a D35 would probably do it as the top of the tire was awful close to the upper fender lip...
