What did YOU do today?

Helped a coworker run a squish test on his f150 when we got back to the shop (2018 2.7). He started experiencing a misfire last week.. changed the plugs.. still missing. Swapped coils around.. the miss stayed on the same cylinder (#6).

Whelp.. hole 6 only wants to make 75lbs while the one in front of it would do a bit over 150. She's cooked.

~130k miles on the truck.. bought it when it had 90k just a couple years ago. Feel bad for him.. he gave up Ford's for GMs probably 20 years ago.. decided to hop back.. poor guy.. he's picking which dealer to leave it with now. Hopefully it's just a top end issue and he can get back on the road with a new head.. well see.

Also got a call from the garage concerning the bronco that I didn't really wanna get 😑 NAPA (NeverAnyPartsAvailable) doesn't have gaskets for the trans pan or the rear diff cover and they can't get any from ford until mid-morning tomorrow.. that's not a big deal really.. what bummed me out was hearing that the whole shebang is gonna cost me 400 more dollars than anticipated 😭 ugh.

Today was lawn work day since it is supposed to rain until Friday. Cut the grass and edged the front side walk since the grass is trying to grow over it. The yard could have used a run at it with a string trimmer as well but I can do that when the grass is wet. So, I passed.

Not today. But went with my buddy Isaiah to buy his son his first truck. Well, first vehicle period. Being it was a Ranger he wanted me to go with. We looked it over and he brought it home. It a 2002 XL long bed. I was worried the 16 year old would be turned off by the long bed but he actually was excited. Its a 3.0, 5 speed manual 2wd. Was a cabinet shop that had it and it been sitting for a little over a year since they purchased a 21 super cab to replace it. Started right up and drove great. They had all the maintenance records with 155k on the odometer. He's super excited and I turned him on to the website. I received about 100 questions after that from 5.0 swap to 4wd conversions. I'm happy it worked out. Isaiah said this morning he was soooo stocked to drive it to school this morning. I was so stoked to see someone so young excited about the Ranger.
A 3.0 is reliable as dirt and doesn't make enough power that a 16 year-old will hurt himself.
My first Ranger was a 99 Supercab 4x4 with a 3.slow and 5-speed. Good on gas for a 4x4 but on long hills on the highway (I live in PA) I'd be down to 3rd gear with my foot to the floor going 50 mph.

I wouldn't use a rheostat. That motor isn't designed to do that and you're not likely to find a rheostat rated for it. Changing the voltage with a rheostat is going to mess with the current and torque capability. Your best choices are mechanically through different pulley ratios or electrically with a variable frequency drive (VFD) rated for a single phase motor of that size. AC motor speed is tied to frequency. Reducing the voltage will reduce the counterEMF in the windings and drive current up. But, frequency will remain the same, so the motor will be trying to run at the same speed it was designed for.

When you think of an old style corded hand-held drill that had a rheostat in the trigger, that was a "universal motor". It was actually capable of running on AC or DC it had brushes and a commutator so that the armature winding field strength could be adjusted with the rheostat. Your drill press has a single phase capacitor start AC motor that is a totally different beast, electrically.
That's why Jim pays you the big money.

Got a call on the way home that the wifes escape (the ‘11 awd V6) didnt want to start, ignition switch again, I bought one a few months ago when it started acting up but then we had a cold snap & it started working right again & I forgot about it, She did get it to start by pushing in and turning, I get home & could not find that thing anywhere. Ordered another one but thinking of putting a push button under the dash. Ordered a iac valve & some vacuum line for the F150, my escape hasn’t had the ignition issue but hers has done this before. Need to clean up my garage, maybe I will find a few things. I admit its a mess.

Took out the Ride on Mower. Did some weeding in the yard. I think I found the issue with my starter, troubleshooted it all day.

My 2011 Escape is doing the same thing. I ordered and received a new switch but haven't bothered to install it yet. While watching YouTube on how to install, I ran across a video that showed how you can fix the old. The problem is that the switch doesn't press inward enough to engage inside the cokumn as material has worn away. So if I press the key in towards the column, it starts every time. I'll wait until it starts screwing up again...

Here's a few pics from the weekend, first the area I tilled up to flatten it out, maybe 20x40, then the nice prybar I found in that, then the wrench with the fun little label I found on the side, it's a good thing it's labeled, I hate when my tools are partially drop forged...

Yesterday, but got my aunt's mower ready for the season. I have to break the deck engagement lever (The one on the deck with the pulley on it.) loose every year. IDK why it sticks. I've even taken it off and spaced things out with teflon washers.

Yesterday did some random shop work, then township meeting and over to a local couple’s place to look for Morels a bit then drink some beer and hang out. Didn’t find any Morels but it’s the season so I may try doing some looking today around here.

Yeah, I didn’t know either….

What did YOU do today?

After I read this, I remember having some prepared for me by a friend who was an excellent chef. Now I’m jealous and my mouth is watering.

I’ve never had them. I never knew what wild mushrooms were safe and what were not. Ended up making friends with a local couple and they’ve had experience with Morels so I’m interested. Apparently they typically like a lot of the trees that grow around home like ash, tulip poplar, etc. Oddly the local couple has more conifers than anything which are not supposed to be ideal habitat and they’ve found around a pound the past couple years. I’m interested in trying them. The real Morels are completely hollow, of there is any fibers or anything inside, it’s not a Morel.

Did a bit of shop work, did a little with my torches (jury is still out on my opinion), wrote down some electrical stuff to cross reference with my EVTMs for the Choptop, then had the bright idea of trying to fix the wiring for the CB in that. Well, the wiring is somewhat there now but the radio has issues. Gonna have to find one of my other radios and try again, this one needs opened up and fixed apparently and that’s low on the priority list right now.

A day late but.. shit went haywire shortly after I left with it so.. forgot to update.

Picked the bronco back up from getting serviced from the garage in town yesterday.

I wanted a pretty thorough servicing.. and VERY EARLY on some of the fluid changes.. doing them so early ended up being a reeeeally good idea too.. I'll get into that in a second.. anyhow.. Engine oil& filter, cabin filter, tire rotation, change the gear lube at both ends, change the t-case fluid, and a spill&fill for the trans. 45.5k miles.

It was supposed to be done on Monday.. buuut napa didn't have any trans pan gaskets, rear diff cover gaskets, merc ULV, OR trans filters. Classic small town napa. So had to wait for the closest dealer to deliver them yesterday morning.

My rough estimate was ~800, ended up being 1250 😖 there were a few surprises on how much Ford charges for some of their crap.. like.. 120 bucks for gear lube and 110 for the trans filter 🙄 "only" 40 for the trans gasket though.. I was expecting a solid Benjamin for that.. anyhow.. results..

Tranny filter was absolutely disgusting apparently, and the fluid was filthy as well.. dipping relatively deep into brown territory.. slight stank to it as well but not bad enough where anyone there or myself considered it burnt. They were gracious enough to take a sample of it for me to send to Blackstone for analysis. Sample will be dropped in the mail tomorrow... I intended on dipping a napkin in it and taking a picture so you guys could see its color but.. things going haywire after I picked it up made me stressed AF and I totally forgot before I sealed it all up in the shipping package.

Regardless, Ford's supposed 150k mile ATF was quite obviously only 40k mile fluid in my case. I was surprised how crappy it had gotten so quickly, as I really try not to be toooo hard on equipment. I'm a saint to my vehicles compared to 10 years ago lol. Full disclosure on my tranny treatment.. shortly after purchase I got the trans temp a couple bars away from the red line on the temp gauge... Ive forgotten what the exact temp was when I checked it but yeah.. it was right up there. Too high for comfort but seemingly not toooooo hot considering I wasn't in the "danger zone" yet. A 2 mile slog up-hill through 8" of mud in 4H was the cause of all that heat.. but I really had no choice but to be in high.. this was baby-shit early spring mud sitting on top of still very solidly frozen (& slippery) ground.. I needed that wheel speed or I was gonna be stuck in the woods for at least a week. Other than that.. I don't tow anthing that weighs even half as heavy as it's rated for.. I generally drive pretty conservatively.. but I WILL occasionally let er eat quite a bit through its lower gears (10-60mph type runs) just to hear the glorious wail of it's tiny little turbo.. and leaving the toll booths that are in the middle of the highway I'll hammer on it once it hits second gear all the way to 80mph or so. These events are pretty far and few between though.. I only leave those toll booths a small handful of times a year and it's usually only once a week (if that) that I'll rip that 10-60mph. There's also a small handful of times during winter where I'll go out and drive around town in a snowstorm as sideways as I can in 4wd and create enough donuts to feed homer Simpson for a week in the middle of big empty intersections.. but naturally it's cold then.. and I'm not out for too too long because eventually johnny law is gonna come around lol so.. not a lot of heat there.

It was a calculated risk putting 10ply 35s on a 3.73 gearset as far as tranny longevity is concerned, but considering how deep it's first and second gears are.. 4.5:1 and something like 2.93:1 for second.. I was willing to take that risk. Thats a very healthy level of reduction after all.

I'm very interested to see what the results are & see how much premature wear i may have introduced to it thanks to the subpar axle ratios.

The gear lube was "VERY obviously used" according to the tech, but no signs of water intrusion.. which was my main concern after spending so much time in water up to the doors while wheeling last year. Good seals. I'm sure it helps that 99% of my wheeling is done in 1st gear low.. moving that slow isn't gonna really put a ton of heat into the diffs so.. sucking water past the seals is wayyy less likely. Either way... Ford's 150k mile axle lube? NOT good for 150k if you like to have fun with your rig..

Tech didnt say anything about the t case juice.. I'm sure it definitely looked like 50k mile fluid but not dirty enough for him to comment on it so... That's nice 😋

Seriously guys, if you own a new Ford and you drive the thing harder than a 90 year old woman... Consider your drivetrain fluid intervals as being the same as anything from the 80s through the 90s.. 50k miles tops for the drivetrain. Id recommend not doing 10k mile engine oil intervals either... I aim for 5-6k between changes personally.. which IS probably overkill... But 7500 feels like way too much to be ideal... Especially with something that makes a boat load of boost.. that shit shears oil down at a surprising rate.
