What did YOU do today?

I sold my Ranger for full price to the 1st person that looked at it. I'm truck-less at the moment. I will never use FB Marketplace again. It's worse than CL with people that don't bother to read the ad. One guy wanted to trade me straight up for an untitled dirt bike.

Dirt bike titles are a thing where you live?

Maine doesn't title ATV/SXS/dirtbikes, boats, motorcycles under 250cc's and don't need one for a vehicle built before 95

Without a valid ownership title, a vehicle or motorcycle could be stolen property. The bike was a Honda CRF250r, not a cheap bike. It seems in California, if it has wheels on it, the government wants to manage it. Off road bikes have to have green rec tags saying they meet spark suppression requirements due to wild fires being our state mascot. Taking my little 16' boat back and forth to Oregon requires a Quagga mussel inspection in both directions. It sucks but it's just the way it is.

Titles are just state extortion. All a guy has to do before purchasing something is have town hall run the vin. If the clerk says.. "oh boy that's been reported stolen".. don't buy.

So glad I live in a small state.

I don't blame you about small states. I do most of my big ticket buying in Oregon, no sales tax, cheap DMV fees, and I can get unlimited ammo shipped my door without some jackboot showing up. California has the most restrictive firearms laws in the country. Don't let Harris fool anyone; she would be a disaster for the country. Hopefully we will never have a President from California in my remaining lifetime. I know, no politics allowed but simple warnings are OK I hope?

So glad i got up and cut the grass before noon. Weed eating was kind of hot but better than after work when the heat index is 110 or 115.
Dang. Right now its 93 with a heat index of 109. Glad i got done already

Two days ago I pulled apart my door and found the clip that was broke and ordered new ones. Today the clips and fan came in but we have the rest of Debby hitting us now so tomorrow I get to fling some parts at it.

Since all the work was done on the truck the new starter has been giving me issues. I'll hit the key and all I get is the clunks of the solenoid and I believe the starter throwing out the gear but no joy on turning the engine over. New parts are junk these days so I need to consider putting in a different starter because I don't want to get stranded. Today I had to turn the key 5 times before the starter actually spun but every time after that it worked properly. Man this is scary not being able to trust a new part.

Got the ranger a pair of NTK o2 sensors, a tube of ultra-grey to assist with my stupid slightly-drippy water pump inlet pipe, and some nice new hardware to hold the coilpacks down. Every single head on the factory coilpack bolts had deteriorated enough where removal required the 'too small of a socket & a hammer' trick. Annoying. Won't have to worry about that ever happening with my facypants stain-free replacements though!

I'd really like to take the thing for a rip this weekend.. but I may wait until next weekend.. give the rtv plenty of time to set up.

Super excited.

In California if you fail to register your off-road vehicle, they will penalize you if you don't file a "non-operational" permit.

I kid you not & this was back in the 80s. Just another reason why I removed myself from there.

It's incredibly sad what we've let beaurocrats turn our once great country into.

I posted this the other day… I think it fits here better.

Well I fixed my passenger side door lock and installed the new fan blade on Beer Fetcher. One of the cracks in the old blade went from front to back and left less than a 1/16 of an inch on both sides holding it together. I think I dodged a bullet there as I already replaced the radiator a few years ago and don't want to do it again this soon.

Does the starter spin, but not turn the engine? Or does it clunk in and nothing spins?

On my 87, the starter would spin, but it wouldn’t catch the flywheel. I did research, I think a lot of it in TRS, and the options were take everything apart and replace the flywheel, or shim the starter closer to the center of the flywheel.

At first, I couldn’t see how shimming the starter would make it catch any better. But the point is not to shim the starter in or out along its axis, it is to go into the bolt holes and put a shim on one side, so the center line of the starter is closer to the centerline of the flywheel.

Turns out you can move the starter in and out about 3/16 to 1/4 Inch by pushing it to one side of the mounting holes.

I took some 1/8 inch aluminum, and cut it into a long V, and shaved the nose a little bit to make it go in easier. Then, on a workbench, I laid a nail down the length, and smacked it pretty hard with a hammer, to create a little U bend to get it between the bolt and the hole a little easier.

As I was putting the bolts in, I slipped them on the outside side to push the starter closer, tapped them in with a piece of flat stock and a little hammer, but the shape then caught under the cap of the bolt and the bolt actually forced them in place as you tightened the bolt.

They looked a lot like the Metal wedge you put in the end of a hammer handle to expand the wood In the hammer head.

Knock on wood, I haven’t had a problem with the starter since. It was the original starter.

BTW, it took longer to write this up than it took to do it.

Hope it helps.

Obviously, the truck is functional because you’re driving it around even if it’s off-road. So I assume the “non-operational“ indication on the certificate refers to the state of california.

The starter just would not spin at all. Turns out the starter was bad even though it was a "new" starter and not remanufactured. Today I ran down to O'Reilly's and got a different starter and installed it right there to be sure it worked properly. This one is a remaned but works better than the new one. Oh well it's done now and fixed.

I harvested the hay in front of the house today. I don’t want to say it had grown too tall, but I had forgotten that I parked the F250 out there.

I start the back 40 tomorrow morning. I’ve got to do it before it goes over like 80°.
